What is a temp CAD?

Temp CADs, or Temporary Computer-Aided Drafters, are professionals hired on a short-term basis to create or modify technical drawings and plans using CAD software. They are often brought in to assist engineering, architectural, or construction firms during periods of high workload, to cover for absent staff, or to handle specific projects. Their responsibilities may include drafting, updating blueprints, and making revisions to existing designs under the guidance of permanent staff. Temp CADs must be proficient in industry-standard CAD programs and able to quickly adapt to new project requirements. This role offers flexibility for both employers and drafters, but often requires the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments.

What does a temp CAD do?

As a Temp CAD (Computer-Aided Design) professional, your daily tasks often involve creating, revising, and managing technical drawings and blueprints under tight project deadlines. One common challenge is quickly adapting to different company CAD standards and processes, as temporary roles may require you to work across multiple projects or teams. You'll frequently collaborate with engineers, architects, and project managers to ensure that designs meet specifications and are ready for production or construction. Effective communication and flexibility are key to succeeding in this fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a temp CAD?

To thrive as a Temp CAD Technician, you need proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software, strong drafting skills, and a relevant technical diploma or degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and sometimes certification such as Autodesk Certified Professional, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you adapt quickly to new projects and collaborate with diverse teams. These skills ensure accurate, efficient project deliverables and seamless integration into temporary assignments.

  • Experience performing construction staking calculations and supporting layout activities.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and adjust to changing priorities across different projects.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Virginia and surrounding states as needed.
  • Willingness to work overtime when project schedules require it.
  • Interest in contributing to a collaborative, multi-office survey and CAD team.
  • Access to a competitive benefits package, including vision, dental, and life insurance at no cost to the employee, significant employer coverage of health insurance, a contribution to a Health Savings Account, and a 401(k) plan with employer match.
