Job description

Company: Brodie Commercial Upholstery
Location: Tempe, Arizona]
Starting Pay: $17 - $19
Schedule: Full time, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Learn a Skilled Trade and Eventually Train the Next Person

Brodie Commercial Upholstery is hiring one new technician trainee for our Washington branch and one for our Arizona branch.

We are an onsite commercial upholstery company specializing in the repair of restaurant booths, health-club equipment pads, medical furnishings, and other commercial upholstered equipment.

This is not simply a temporary shop-helper position. We are looking for a serious, long-term employee who wants to learn a skilled trade, become a dependable technician, and eventually help train the next person entering our system.

Previous upholstery experience is not required. In many cases, we prefer to train someone from the beginning so they learn our methods, quality standards, and systems correctly.

How Our Training Program Works

Upholstery is a hands-on trade that takes time and repetition to learn. We have developed a structured training system that includes:

  • Training videos
  • Written instructions and checklists
  • Practice pieces
  • Hands-on demonstrations
  • Supervised shop and field experience
  • Skill testing and teach-back exercises

Our complete training path takes approximately two years. You will begin with basic preparation, teardown, organization, and installation work. As you demonstrate reliability and skill, you will advance into more difficult upholstery techniques, independent fieldwork, and greater responsibility.

Our training philosophy is simple:

Watch it. Practice it. Prove it. Teach it.

Once you master a skill, you will be expected to explain and demonstrate it to the next employee coming through the training system.

Who We Are Looking For

The right person:

  • Shows up consistently and is ready to work on time
  • Brings energy and maintains a productive working pace
  • Watches training videos carefully and follows instructions
  • Keeps tools, hardware, materials, vehicles, and work areas organized
  • Notices work that needs to be done without always waiting to be told
  • Understands the value of checklists and repeatable systems
  • Asks questions when something is unclear
  • Accepts coaching and correction without becoming defensive
  • Takes pride in doing clean, accurate work
  • Wants a long-term career rather than a temporary job
  • Is willing to teach newer employees after mastering the work

Reliable attendance is essential. A 6:00 a.m. starting time means being present, prepared, and ready to begin working at 6:00 a.m.

No-call/no-show behavior is not tolerated.

Initial Job Duties

You will begin by helping with basic shop and onsite work, including:

  • Unbolting and removing gym and fitness-equipment pads
  • Reinstalling completed pads and related hardware
  • Pulling staples from old upholstered pieces
  • Removing worn vinyl and damaged material
  • Preparing pads and furnishings for repair
  • Keeping screws, bolts, brackets, tools, and customer parts organized
  • Loading and unloading company vehicles
  • Cleaning and organizing workstations
  • Assisting experienced technicians at customer locations
  • Watching assigned training videos and completing practice exercises
  • Following job checklists and company procedures
  • Taking clear job photographs and helping complete job documentation

As your skills increase, you may learn pattern handling, cutting, stapling, sewing-related preparation, complete pad rebuilding, onsite installation, customer communication, and technician-training responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Able to follow verbal, written, and video instructions
  • Able to work efficiently while maintaining quality
  • Organized and attentive to details
  • Comfortable learning to use hand tools, drills, wrenches, and related equipment
  • Able to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds
  • Able to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and work around commercial equipment
  • Willing to perform basic work before advancing to higher-skill responsibilities
  • Willing to learn company systems and follow established procedures
  • Willing to help teach future trainees after becoming qualified

Experience with tools, installation, construction, maintenance, warehouse work, equipment repair, furniture assembly, automotive interiors, or another hands-on job is helpful but not required.

Advancement and Pay Growth

This position has a real advancement path.

You will begin with basic labor, preparation, and assistance responsibilities. Raises and additional responsibilities will be based on demonstrated performance, including:

  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Organization
  • Productivity
  • Quality of work
  • Ability to follow systems
  • Number of skills mastered
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to help train other employees

Employees who consistently demonstrate reliability, skill, initiative, and leadership may advance into independent technician and technician-trainer positions.

Benefits

  • Paid training
  • Fully paid employee medical insurance after three months
  • One week of paid vacation after three months
  • Two weeks of paid vacation after one year
  • Matching retirement contributions after one year
  • Eight paid major holidays
  • Company tools and equipment provided for assigned work
  • Full-time weekday schedule
  • Opportunity to learn a specialized skilled trade
  • Opportunity for increased pay and responsibility

How to Apply

Please answer the application questions completely. We are more interested in the quality and thoughtfulness of your answers than in having upholstery experience.

To demonstrate that you read the entire posting, begin your answer to the first application question with the word:

TEACH

Then briefly explain:

  1. Why this position interests you.
  2. Something you successfully learned by watching a video or following written instructions.
  3. A system you have used to keep tools, parts, schoolwork, appointments, or job responsibilities organized.
  4. Something you have taught another person.
  5. What being “ready to work at 6:00 a.m.” means to you.

Brodie Commercial Upholstery is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on job-related qualifications, demonstrated ability, reliability, performance, and business needs.
