What is a Temp 5G Core Network?

A Temp 5G Core Network role typically refers to a temporary or contract-based position focused on the deployment, management, and optimization of 5G core network infrastructure. Professionals in this role help design and maintain the core network that supports 5G services, ensuring high performance, security, and reliability. They may work on network slicing, virtualization, and integration with legacy systems, playing a key part in the rollout and operation of 5G networks. This role often requires expertise in networking, telecom protocols, and emerging 5G technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp 5G Core Network engineer?

To thrive as a Temp 5G Core Network Engineer, you need a solid grounding in telecommunications, networking principles, and hands-on experience with 5G core technologies, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with network management tools, virtualization platforms (like NFV/SDN), and certifications such as CCNA or 5G-specific credentials are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective problem-solving, and collaboration skills help you excel in dynamic, cross-functional environments. These skills ensure reliable network performance, rapid issue resolution, and seamless integration of new 5G services.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Temp 5G Core Network roles?

Professionals in Temp 5G Core Network roles often navigate challenges such as rapidly evolving technologies, tight project timelines, and the need to integrate 5G solutions with existing legacy systems. Staying current with 3GPP standards and ensuring network security and reliability are also key concerns. Additionally, effective collaboration with cross-functional teams—including network engineers, software developers, and operations staff—is critical for troubleshooting issues and achieving smooth network deployment.

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

We’re seeking an experiencedTechnical Product Ownerto lead and evolve our3GPP Core Network capability, with a focus on NB-IoT Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and 5G NR use cases. This role requires handson experience with mobile core technologies, strong systemslevel understanding of 3GPP architecture, and the ability to drive a roadmap that advances our satellitebased mobility strategy.

We’re looking for someone who can bridge network engineering, standards, and operational excellence—enabling mobile core capabilities that not only meet 3GPP and GSMA interoperability standards, but also deliver a highly optimized, reliable experience for NTN terminals and global customers.

The day-to-day
  • Own and manage the global product roadmap for NBIoT NTN and 5G NR NTN Core Network capabilities.
  • Define and prioritize technical requirements that enhance NTN performance, roaming behaviors, attach procedures, mobility, and service continuity for satelliteenabled devices.
  • Embed the endtoend NTN device and service journey into solution design to ensure seamless interaction between RANNTN, satellite systems, and 3GPP Core.
  • Execute against architectural governance, performance KPIs, and servicelevel expectations for largescale NTN deployments across multiple geographies and regulatory regions.
  • Engage as a key participant in the integration strategy between core systems and upstream/downstream elements, including gNBNTN, RAN Intelligent Controllers, OSS/BSS, and cloudnative orchestration platforms.
  • Oversee vendor relationships, licensing, and partner engagement related to 3GPP Core (e.g., AMF/SMF/UPF vendors, network function suppliers).
  • Collaborate with systems engineering to map 3GPP Release 17/18/19 NTN features into product capabilities and deployment milestones.
  • Provide operational insight, performance trend analysis, and recommendations for scaling NTN connectivity, optimizing latency, and improving signaling efficiency.
  • Support security, audit, and compliance requirements including 3GPP security architecture, lawful intercept, and data governance.
  • Guide a distributed development and operations engineering team to deliver highavailability, cloudnative core solutions optimized for satellite propagation and mobility models.
  • Drive ongoing product excellence through iterative refinement, customer feedback, and continuous alignment with emerging 3GPP standards.

What you'll need
  • 5+ years as a Technical Product Owner or technical lead within mobile core networks, preferably including 3GPPbased IoT or NTN solutions.
  • Strong understanding of 3GPP Core Architecture and related servicebased interfaces.
  • Experience with NBIoT, LTEM, or 5G NR, and an understanding of how these technologies adapt for NTN.
  • Knowledge of network security fundamentals, SDLC, Agile delivery frameworks, and DevOps processes.
  • Ability to build strong crossfunctional partnerships and deliver solutions aligned with product strategy, standards compliance, and global regulatory requirements.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, including ability to prepare materials for executive audiences.
  • Proven experience leading largescale, enterprise or carriergrade network projects.
  • General understanding of cloudnative deployments (Kubernetes, microservices, CI/CD).
  • BA/BS in EE/CS, telecommunications, networking, or equivalent experience.
  • Up to 10% travel.

What will help you on the job
  • Prior handson experience with LTE/5G Core mobility architectures.
  • Proven ability to translate complex 3GPP standards (e.g., Releases 17–19 NTN features) into realworld, scalable product capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of endtoend enterprise and carrier architecture, data governance, and the ability to integrate AIdriven insights into network performance and operations.
  • Goaloriented mindset with the ability to prioritize and make tradeoffs in a dynamic, evolving technical environment.
