Job description

Summary
This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) of the VA Medical Center in Tucson, AZ, serving as the Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) Coordinator and works with NFS information systems. The NCC Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the systems and resolving issues.

Help
Include but are not limited to:
  • Resolves information technology issues related to integration of VISTA, Get Well Network/Touch Tone Dining and N&FS Systems
  • Develops and updates nutrient database on nutrition analysis of menu items served
  • Makes menu/recipe changes and all necessary updates in food service system (any commercial of-the-shelf (COTS) program)
  • Consults with COTS contractor when unable to resolve issues internally
  • Troubleshoots and resolves all electronic or paper menu issues
  • Consults with clinical nutrition staff to resolve tray ticket issues with complex diets;
  • Provides training and orientation for all N&FS employees
  • Serves as NCC liaison between Veterans, multidisciplinary healthcare staff and N&FS staff
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by assisting in the development of indicators and monitors, data collection and analysis, corrective actions and preparation of reports
  • Handles patient problems and complaints related to N&FS as appropriate
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency standards, including state, federal and Joint Commission
  • Performing related duties as required.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
In addition to meeting the IOR above you must one of the following:Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Examples of specialized experience in the Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) would typically include, but are not limited to: assisting with Customer Support, Information Security, Customer Service and Staff Development.

  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

  • Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Examples are listed below:(a) Six months of experience in the health care field and three months of graduate education in health care related courses such as, biological science, surgical technician courses, nursing assistant or other courses related to the position.

Physical Requirements: The work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying of light items, such as food trays, instruction materials, books, and manuals. NCC Associate functions require long periods of sitting and moving about in an office environment, including repetitive motion activities of the hands and fingers for extensive keyboard and computer mouse use, and office tasks such as answering and holding a telephone phone, and writing. The work may require walking indoors, outdoors or to and from other areas of the medical center. It may be necessary to lift and/or push equipment. Incumbent is subject to periods continuous standing, sitting, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
