The Data Analytics and Visualizations Lead Developer drives data analysis projects and reporting initiatives for the South Carolina Department of Education. This role leads the design and development of enterprise dashboards and reports, builds and maintains the analytic code powering recurring and ad hoc reporting, and partners with internal and external stakeholders to translate complex education data into clear, actionable insights. The position works with significant independence and is expected to mentor junior analysts while managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Job Purpose
The South Carolina Department of Education is seeking a Data Analytics & Visualization Lead Developer to drive data analysis projects and activities. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading and executing reporting projects, designing data visualizations, and contributing to the development of business intelligence initiatives that support the Agency's strategic goals.
  • Responsibilities
    Data Reporting and Visualization Development: Leads projects and mentors junior analysts that design and build enterprise dashboards and reports. These digital artifacts translate complex education data into clear, decision-ready insights for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Analytics Engineering and Code Management: Develops and sustains the analytic code and queries that power recurring and ad hoc reporting, ensuring outputs are accurate, reliable, and production-ready.
  • Data Quality and Integrity Enablement: Uses analytics and reporting to surface, diagnose, and improve data accuracy, completeness, and connectivity across agency data systems.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Analytics Delivery: Partners with internal teams and external stakeholders to translate business questions into well-scoped analyses, documented processes, and actionable findings.
  • Works independently with responsibility for all assigned work activities, managing multiple complex projects and completing assignments on time within project guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree with statistical courses and experience in statistics.
Preferred Qualifications
A bachelor's degree with statistical courses and experience in statistics or in a quantitative or related field (such as Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.) or commensurate training and/or experience in statistics and data analytics. Experience with complex datasets, statistical tools and techniques, data analysis, data architecture, or software design and development.
  • Ability to design data analysis studies, including methods and procedures for the collection, sampling, maintenance, analysis, and presentation of information.
  • Knowledge of statistical software (R, Python, SAS, etc.), data query languages (SQL, NoSQL, etc.), data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.), or other programming languages (Python, Java, C++, Julia).
  • Experience developing and maintaining analytic code and queries in a production reporting environment.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with team members, executives, and partners to convey knowledge and concepts clearly.
  • Commitment to continually building on existing knowledge and staying current with the latest software and analysis innovations.
  • Desire to innovate and create cutting-edge solutions that make a significant impact.
  • Familiarity with the Ed-Fi data standard and experience working with the Ed-Fi and EDU schema, including querying and analyzing data structured within those frameworks.
