What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Telecommunications AutoCAD Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Telecommunications AutoCAD Technician, you need a solid understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, proficiency in AutoCAD software, and a background in drafting or engineering—often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with GIS systems, fiber optic design tools, and standards like BICSI or RCDD certification is also highly valued. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure precise technical drawings and efficient collaboration, which are critical for successful project implementation in telecommunications.

How does a Telecommunications AutoCAD specialist typically collaborate with engineers and field technicians during a project?

Telecommunications AutoCAD specialists work closely with engineers to interpret project requirements and convert them into precise technical drawings and schematics. Throughout a project, they also coordinate with field technicians to ensure that the designs are practical and meet installation needs. Regular communication is essential, as AutoCAD specialists may need to update plans based on feedback from on-site teams or changes in project scope. This collaborative approach helps ensure that telecommunications infrastructure is installed accurately and efficiently.

AGE Solutions is seeking an experienced Telecommunications Design Drafter to support a telecommunications infrastructure refresh for a federal customer in Washington, DC. This effort will support the modernization of enterprise voice, data, and telecommunications infrastructure across a secure, multi-building government environment.

The Telecommunications Design Drafter will develop and maintain technical drawings using AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio, document existing telecommunications infrastructure, translate field-collected survey data into accurate engineering drawings, and support the development of telecommunications infrastructure designs based on legacy conditions, project requirements, and engineering direction.

Candidates must live within a commutable distance of Washington, DC to work onsite full time or be willing to relocate to the Washington, DC area.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop, update, and maintain telecommunications drawings and design packages using AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio.
  • Create and revise floor plans, telecommunications layouts, pathway drawings, conduit plans, rack elevations, cable routing diagrams, network diagrams, and infrastructure details.
  • Translate field notes, survey forms, sketches, redlines, photographs, pathway data, cable route information, telecom room documentation, and legacy records into accurate AutoCAD and Visio drawings.
  • Document existing infrastructure including building entrances, MDFs, IDFs, backbone routes, risers, cable pathways, rack layouts, patch fields, OSP routes, OSP-to-ISP transitions, and known constraints.
  • Support the development of proposed telecommunications infrastructure designs for fiber backbone, copper cabling, telecommunications pathways, MDF/IDF layouts, rack elevations, cable routing, and equipment placement.
  • Produce detailed as-built drawings and construction-ready documentation supporting implementation activities.
  • Read and interpret architectural, engineering, and telecommunications drawings to ensure design accuracy and consistency.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and field technicians to resolve missing, conflicting, or incomplete survey information.
  • Incorporate field redlines, engineering comments, QA/QC comments, and customer review feedback into controlled drawing packages.
  • Maintain drawing version control, file naming standards, revision histories, and document management processes.
  • Identify pathway limitations, rack-space constraints, cable management concerns, incomplete documentation, and other issues affecting proposed designs.
  • Support preparation of survey packages, engineering drawing sets, implementation work packages, and final turnover documentation.
  • Ensure all AutoCAD and Visio deliverables meet project standards, customer requirements, engineering specifications, and quality expectations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Active Top Secret clearance.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, including development and modification of telecommunications, infrastructure, and construction drawings.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Visio, including telecommunications diagrams, rack elevations, network diagrams, pathway layouts, and floor plan overlays.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel for schedules, document control, and tracking.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical drawings for telecommunications, structured cabling, low-voltage systems, network infrastructure, facilities, or engineering projects.
  • Experience supporting telecommunications infrastructure design, structured cabling documentation, OSP/ISP planning, network modernization, or facilities modernization projects.
  • Ability to interpret and update architectural floor plans, telecom drawings, engineering markups, field sketches, and redline documentation.
  • Experience producing accurate as-built documentation and construction drawing packages.
  • Familiarity with MDFs, IDFs, telecommunications rooms, racks, patch panels, fiber shelves, copper patch panels, backbone cabling, horizontal cabling, cable tray, ladder rack, conduit, sleeves, pathways, risers, building entrances, and OSP/ISP transitions.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems, fiber optics, copper cabling, cable routing, labeling, patching, rack elevations, and telecommunications infrastructure design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage drawing revisions across multiple buildings, floors, telecom rooms, and project phases.
  • Ability to work onsite full time in Washington, DC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting secure federal, DoD, Intelligence Community, or other mission-critical environments.
  • Experience supporting large-scale telecommunications infrastructure modernization or campus-wide structured cabling projects.
  • Familiarity with BICSI standards and structured cabling best practices.
  • Experience developing telecommunications designs from incomplete or legacy infrastructure documentation.
