Job description

HDD LOCATOR - TELECOM

GCS is looking for competent and experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling Locator to work on telecom installation projects in the Red Deer area. The successful candidates will be determined by their experience and attitude toward working in demanding environments with long hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide some idea of the tasks you may be performing, a list of responsibilities may include but are not limited to:


  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and exertion of whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling of materials;

  • Read and understand drawings, construct forms and rebar reinforcement as per project specifications;

  • Executing field projects according to instructions provided by the client, project manager and the field supervisor;

  • Read and interpret drawings, locates or diagrams and perform required work;

  • Use the locating device throughout the duration of the drill shot;

  • Verify that the drill head is passing through the center of the daylighted sight holes;

  • Work with the Driller to complete directional drill shots for placing fibre conduit or other shallow utilities;

  • Complete a walk through of the drill shots with the drilling foreman prior conducting the work;

  • Drill to specifications on the locates in accordance with the designated bore path;

  • Maintain communications with the Driller by radio at all times;

  • Participate in site safety including pre-job orientations, Daily Toolbox meetings, monthly safety meetings, etc.

  • Complete all daily safety paperwork (FLHAs, HDD Ground Disturbance Checklists and pre-use forms) as specified;

  • Responsible for ensuring permits are valid and completing drilling specific documentation;

  • Work with minimal supervision and direction;

  • Follow all HSE and quality management procedures;

  • Remediation scopes;

  • Other drilling / labor tasks as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

Requirements and qualifications for this position are a combination of skills and attitude:


  • 3+ years of HDD locating experience;

  • Knowledge of and experience working with underground utilities;

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, locates or diagrams;

  • Prior telecom, fibre and hydro vac experience an asset;

  • Ditch Witch / Subsite experience for HDD scopes;

  • Must be able to work in varied weather conditions;

  • Ability to account for various soil conditions and inclines (topography) when drilling;

  • Ability to think and react to changing conditions quickly;

  • Strong manual dexterity and hand eye coordination;

  • Safety conscious attitude is critical;

  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance and diligent in maintaining equipment;

  • Good judgement and problem-solving capacity;

  • Physically fit and capable of lifting +50lbs;

  • Strong work ethic;

  • Ability to work in a fast- paced environment with tight deadlines and repetitive tasks.

  • A valid Class 5 drivers license with clean drivers abstract


REQUIRED CERTIFICATES


  • Ground Disturbance Level 2 training certification;

  • CSTS 2020 training certification
