Tele Intensivist Jobs in Texas (NOW HIRING)

Tele Intensivist information

What is a tele intensivist?

A Tele Intensivist is a critical care physician who provides remote care for ICU patients using telemedicine technology. They monitor patients, interpret data, collaborate with bedside teams, and make real-time treatment decisions through audio-video communication and electronic health records. This role helps extend ICU coverage, improve patient outcomes, and support hospitals with limited intensivist availability. Tele Intensivists work from a remote location but provide continuous critical care expertise.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a tele intensivist?

To thrive as a Tele Intensivist, you need board certification in critical care medicine, advanced clinical expertise in managing critically ill patients, and strong decision-making skills. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, remote patient monitoring technologies, and secure data transmission systems is essential. Key soft skills include clear virtual communication, collaboration with onsite healthcare teams, and adaptability to rapidly changing situations. These competencies are vital to delivering timely, high-quality care to ICU patients remotely while ensuring seamless interdisciplinary teamwork.

What are the typical work hours and team structure for a tele intensivist?

Tele Intensivists often work flexible or rotating shifts that may include nights, weekends, or holidays, as remote patient coverage is needed around the clock. You will operate as part of a multidisciplinary tele-ICU team, collaborating closely with bedside clinicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals through secure digital communication platforms. The team structure usually includes a mix of remote and onsite providers working together to deliver real-time, critical care support and interventions. This collaborative, technology-enabled setup allows you to make significant clinical decisions and positively impact patient outcomes while maintaining a manageable work-life balance.

Job description

NOCTURNIST HOSPITALIST – BSA HEALTH SYSTEM | AMARILLO, TEXAS

Physician-led, hospital-employed nocturnist opportunity in a Top 100 Hospital with full intensivist and specialty support.

Join a collaborative and well-established hospitalist program at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital, a 450-bed regional referral center in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. The BSA Hospitalist Group includes 35 board-certified/board-eligible physicians and 8 advanced practice providers managing a daily census of approximately 230–240 patients. This opportunity offers autonomy with strong system support, 24/7 intensivist backup, and a collegial culture known for stability and teamwork.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our nocturnist team handles overnight admissions, ICU and floor cross-coverage, and NP supervision with dedicated support from intensivists and the evening split-shift team.

  • Schedule: 7-on / 7-off
  • Team: 2 physicians + 1 NP each night
  • Primary Duties: Admissions from ER & direct admits, NP supervision, ICU and floor coverage
  • ICU: Semi-open model with 24/7 medical and surgical intensivist coverage; hospitalists may manage selected ICU patients in coordination
  • Procedures: Optional – central line and airway skills encouraged but not required; vascular access team handles most lines; RT, ICU, and Anesthesia available for airway support
  • EMR: EPIC, with established templates and hospitalist-friendly workflows.

Unlike many larger metro programs, our nocturnist physicians typically manage 5–6 new patients per night (range 3–11). This balanced workload allows time for thoughtful chart review, communication with families, and patient-centered decision-making. Physicians here feel supported, not rushed—and that makes a measurable difference in care quality.

Our program is known for its organization and efficiency—from well-defined coverage roles to NP-managed phone triage and seamless patient distribution. It’s a system designed to let physicians focus on medicine, not logistics.

    OPERATIONAL SNAPSHOT

  • 450-bed acute-care facility | 60-bed ER | 50-bed ICU | Level III Trauma | Chest Pain & Primary Stroke Centers
  • Average daily hospitalist census: 230 patients | 55 new admits/consults per day
  • MDs average 5–6 admissions per shift | NPs average 4–5
  • Cross-coverage shared with evening (split) team for seamless hand-offs
