What is a teen pharmacy assistant?

Teen Pharmacy Assistants are young individuals, typically high school students, who work part-time in pharmacies to gain experience in the healthcare field. They assist licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with tasks such as stocking shelves, organizing inventory, and providing customer service. While they do not handle prescription medications directly, they play a vital role in supporting daily pharmacy operations. This position helps teens develop workplace skills and can be a stepping stone for a future career in pharmacy or healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a teen pharmacy assistant?

To thrive as a Teen Pharmacy Assistant, you need basic knowledge of pharmacy operations, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills, often supported by a high school diploma or ongoing secondary education. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, prescription processing software, and inventory management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, customer service, and teamwork skills help build trust and ensure a positive experience for patients and colleagues. These abilities are crucial for maintaining accuracy, supporting the pharmacy team, and delivering safe, efficient service to customers.

What are some common challenges faced by teen pharmacy assistants, and how can they be managed?

Teen pharmacy assistants often juggle learning new technical skills with delivering excellent customer service, all while adapting to a fast-paced environment. Balancing school commitments with work schedules and quickly mastering pharmacy software or medication organization can be challenging. To manage these, it's helpful to ask questions, seek guidance from experienced colleagues, and prioritize tasks efficiently. Open communication with supervisors about scheduling and clear documentation of procedures can make the role more manageable and rewarding.

Job description

Sadler Health Center is looking for a Physician Assistant who wants the full breadth of family medicine back.

Not a narrow slice of it. Here you will care for newborns, teenagers, working adults, and elders — often from the same family, sometimes on the same afternoon — and you will keep caring for them for years.

As a Federally Qualified Health Center, we serve patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. That means your panel will include people managing multiple chronic conditions alongside real social complexity: uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension, anxiety and depression, ADD/ADHD, substance use, housing and food insecurity. It is demanding work. It is also the work that changes outcomes, and you will not be doing it alone — behavioral health, case management, pharmacy, and community health workers are embedded on your team and a referral away, not a fax away.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide comprehensive primary and family care to patients of all ages, in accordance with Pennsylvania licensure and your professional scope of practice.
  • Diagnose and manage complex, comorbid presentations — including hypertension, diabetes, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, and pediatric acute and well care — and escalate or refer when the patient needs more.
  • Order, interpret, and integrate laboratory and diagnostic results into sound assessments and treatment plans.
  • Coordinate transitions of care as patients move between inpatient, emergency, and community-based settings.
  • Drive preventive care: routine screening, immunizations, well visits, and connection to community resources for the patient and their family.
  • Educate patients and families on medications and treatment plans, engaging case management when needed.

WHAT YOU BRING

Required

  • Graduate of an ARC-PA (AMA-approved) Physician Assistant program; master's-level degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate experience as a Physician Assistant in primary care. Candidates with substantially more experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Current, valid Physician Assistant license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Ability to obtain a valid DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificate prior to start date
  • Sound clinical judgment, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to work independently in a fast-moving clinic.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred

  • Experience in a community health center, FQHC, or public health clinic setting.
  • Experience serving low-income, multi-ethnic, and medically underserved populations.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) or additional language capability.
  • Experience with value-based care, HEDIS/UDS quality measures, or PCMH workflows.

Sadler offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer-sponsored retirement plan; paid time off and paid holidays; CME allowance and paid CME time; licensure and DEA reimbursement; and federal malpractice coverage under FTCA.
