What is a technology project manager?

Technology Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing technology-related projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage budgets, set timelines, and ensure that project goals align with business objectives. Their role involves identifying project requirements, managing risks, and communicating progress to stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery. Technology Project Managers often work with software development, IT infrastructure, or digital transformation initiatives.

How does a technology project manager typically balance technical and stakeholder communication responsibilities?

As a Technology Project Manager, you’ll regularly bridge the gap between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders. This means translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable updates for clients, executives, or cross-functional partners while ensuring your technical team receives precise requirements and timely feedback. Effective communication is key—expect to facilitate meetings, manage expectations, resolve misunderstandings, and regularly update all parties on project status. This balance is crucial for keeping projects on track and ensuring alignment across teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technology project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Project Manager, you need a solid background in project management methodologies, technical acumen, and often a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage cross-functional teams and stakeholder expectations. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet business objectives in a dynamic tech environment.

  • Support portfolio planning, project intake, prioritization, and strategic technology roadmaps
  • Ensure projects adhere to established project management standards, methodologies, and best practices
  • Mentor and support project managers while contributing to the continued growth and maturity of project management capabilities across the organization
  • Drive accountability and alignment among project teams to achieve desired business and operational outcomes
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Seven or more years of experience leading complex IT projects within healthcare or enterprise environments
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple large-scale, cross-functional initiatives simultaneously
  • Experience supporting healthcare technology ecosystems, including Epic or other electronic medical record platforms preferred
  • Strong understanding of project governance, risk management, budgeting, resource planning, and stakeholder engagement
  • Experience working with technology vendors and consulting partners during implementation projects
  • Strong leadership, communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities
  • Experience with project management tools such as ServiceNow SPM, Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, Jira, or similar platforms preferred

Preferred:
  • PMP, PgMP, or similar project management certification
  • Experience leading enterprise application, integration, infrastructure, or digital transformation initiatives
  • Experience working within a Project Management Office (PMO) environment
What We Offer
  • The opportunity to lead strategic technology initiatives that directly impact patient care and organizational success
  • Exposure to large-scale healthcare technology projects and enterprise systems
  • Collaboration with executive leaders, clinicians, operational teams, and technology professionals across the health system
  • Opportunities to drive innovation, process improvement, and digital transformation efforts
  • Leadership responsibilities that allow you to influence project delivery practices and organizational outcomes
  • Professional growth through complex project portfolios, emerging technologies, and enterprise initiatives
  • A supportive environment that values collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Career advancement opportunities within healthcare technology, project management, and organizational leadership
  • A stable and growing healthcare organization committed to leveraging technology to improve the lives of the communities we serve
