What is a technology project manager?

Technology Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing technology-related projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage budgets, set timelines, and ensure that project goals align with business objectives. Their role involves identifying project requirements, managing risks, and communicating progress to stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery. Technology Project Managers often work with software development, IT infrastructure, or digital transformation initiatives.

How does a technology project manager typically balance technical and stakeholder communication responsibilities?

As a Technology Project Manager, you’ll regularly bridge the gap between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders. This means translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable updates for clients, executives, or cross-functional partners while ensuring your technical team receives precise requirements and timely feedback. Effective communication is key—expect to facilitate meetings, manage expectations, resolve misunderstandings, and regularly update all parties on project status. This balance is crucial for keeping projects on track and ensuring alignment across teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technology project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Project Manager, you need a solid background in project management methodologies, technical acumen, and often a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage cross-functional teams and stakeholder expectations. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet business objectives in a dynamic tech environment.

Job Title: Senior IT Project Manager (Business Systems Modernization)
Role Overview
We are seeking a strategic and experienced Senior IT Project Manager to lead complex, cross-functional technology initiatives that modernize core business systems and enable scalable enterprise capabilities. In this role, you will plan, monitor, and drive the execution of high-impact IT programs-spanning ERP, CRM, enterprise integrations, data workflows, and platform modernization-from discovery and requirements through deployment, stabilization, and operational handoff.
This is a high-visibility leadership role serving as the focal point of communication across IT, business stakeholders, third-party vendors, and executive sponsors. You will align teams around scope, timelines, dependencies, and risk management while ensuring value delivery remains strictly tied to company standards and modernization goals. If you have a proven track record of successfully delivering enterprise-wide transformations, we want to hear from you.

Full Lifecycle Leadership: Lead project teams through discovery, requirements gathering, solution planning, implementation, testing, deployment, stabilization, and operational handoff.
Dependency & Scope Management: Translate business objectives into structured project plans, breaking down requirements, establishing milestones, managing critical paths, and coordinating complex cross-functional dependencies.
Stakeholder Alignment & Vendor Management
Executive Communication: Serve as the primary communication hub for modernization programs, producing executive status decks, managing RAID logs, tracking decision/action logs, and presenting regular updates to leadership.
Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner closely with business owners, IT leadership, architecture, security, and operations to sequence work, confirm accountability, and ensure commitments are met.
Vendor & Partner Oversight: Work directly with software vendors and third-party implementation partners to manage deliverables, technical environments, resource schedules, and issue resolution.
Governance & Process Improvement
Methodology Application: Utilize a flexible blend of Waterfall, Agile, hybrid, and stage-gate delivery methodologies tailored to the needs of the initiative.
Continuous Improvement: Continually evaluate project management processes, tools, templates, and governance practices to drive efficiency, transparency, and consistency across delivery teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED (Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Technology, or a related field preferred).
Experience Baseline: 5+ years of dedicated professional experience in IT project management, leading strategic, high-value technology programs of varying size and complexity.
Platform Experience: Significant, hands-on experience delivering ERP and/or CRM implementations, upgrades, migrations, integrations, or large-scale business process modernization initiatives.
Technical & Methodological Expertise:
oExpert command of project management techniques (Work Breakdown Structures, Gantt planning, Critical Path, risk management, and dependency tracking).
oComprehensive understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), release readiness, and support transition frameworks.
oProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, Visio, and project tracking tools like Jira and Confluence.
Core Competencies: Exceptional executive-level communication, stakeholder management, and conflict-resolution skills.
Preferred Attributes
Professional certifications such as PMP, Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or SAFe Agilist.
Direct experience managing enterprise integrations, data migrations, reporting architectures, workflow automation, or identity and access management (IAM) initiatives.
Proven ability to mentor other project managers and share best practices across the organization.
