The GI Lab Technician assists the gastroenterologist and/or surgeon with a number of GI procedures and provides patient care in the clinical setting specifically assisting with bedside cases done in the ER and ICU units. Also responsible for the care, cleaning, handling and preventive maintenance of GI endoscopic equipment and instrumentation.


Responsibilities
  • Proper handing, preventive maintenance, cleaning of endoscopes per policy.
  • Must maintain surgical technician experience by cross training in operating room and maintain competencies.
  • Clean and prepare for decontamination, reusable endoscopic instruments per policy, including endoscopes and reusable equipment such as biopsy forceps.
  • Assisting with room turnover, to include cleaning stretcher, Endo cart and other surfaces.
  • Maintain general medical supplies in room per par level list.
  • Maintain GI specific supplies per par list for assigned room.
  • Ensuring proper equipment in room prior to initiation of conscious sedation (i.e. Ultrasound for Liver Biopsy, ERCP supply cart for ERCPs).
  • Knowledge of C More operating system - including how to initiate exam report, end report and generate pathology slip if needed.
  • Assist in timely transfer of patients into GI procedure room (i.e. helping ensure all rooms have patients in them by 0800 and 1300.).
  • Prior to departure at end of each day, ensuring GI supplies are stocked per par list in the room or rooms assigned.
  • Maintenance of Cydex Log Book to include daily testing of Cydex concentration and maintaining logbook when Reprocessor is flushed and new solution added.
  • Maintaining and developing par level list of GI supplies for each room, and general medical supplies for each room.
  • Conducting product testing and filling out product testing sheets when trying or trialing new equipment.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by management within job scope 

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED

Required Licensure/Certifications: BLS

Required Experience: 1-2 years as a Surgical Tech, GI Tech, Medical Assistant, CNA, Patient Care Associate, Corpsman or other relevant medical experience.

Preferred Experience: Two (2) or more years working in a health care environment as GI Tech or PCA.

Preferred Licensure/Certifications: Certified Endoscope Reprocessor

Necessary Skills:

1. Knowledge of patient care and basic human needs throughout the life span.

2. Knowledge of medical terminology.

3. Knowledge of aseptic techniques.

4. Knowledge of acute and chronic disease process.

5. Knowledge of standard precautions.

6. Basic knowledge of anatomic structure and human body system.

Age of Patients Served: Adult (18-64 years) Geriatric (=>65 years)
