What is technology procurement?

Technology procurement refers to the process of sourcing, negotiating, and acquiring technology products and services for an organization. This can include hardware, software, cloud services, and IT consulting. The goal of technology procurement is to ensure that the organization gets the best value, quality, and support for its technology investments while complying with internal policies and external regulations. Professionals in this field work closely with vendors, technical teams, and stakeholders to assess needs, manage contracts, and oversee delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in technology procurement, and why are they important?

To thrive in Technology Procurement, you need strong negotiation, analytical, and contract management skills, typically supported by a background in business, supply chain, or information technology. Familiarity with procurement software (such as SAP Ariba), ERP systems, and relevant certifications (like CPSM or ITIL) is often required. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving abilities help professionals collaborate with vendors and internal stakeholders. These skills ensure cost-effective, compliant, and strategic acquisition of technology resources, supporting organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced in a technology procurement role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Technology Procurement often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing technology requirements, vendor management complexities, and balancing cost with quality. Staying updated on emerging technologies and market trends is essential to make informed purchasing decisions. Effective communication and collaboration with IT, finance, and legal teams help ensure that procurement aligns with organizational goals and compliance standards. Building strong relationships with vendors and negotiating clear contracts can also mitigate risks and ensure timely delivery of products and services.

If you're looking to build a career in IT procurement, software sourcing, or technology vendor management, this is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to strategic procurement initiatives while working alongside experienced procurement and technology professionals.

The Opportunity

As an IT Procurement Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting and leading sourcing activities across software, cloud services, technology consulting, and professional services categories.

You will play a key role in managing software renewals, running procurement events, supporting contract negotiations, and helping to develop a maturing Software Asset Management (SAM) capability.

This is a highly visible position that requires strong stakeholder engagement skills and the confidence to work with senior leaders across technology functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of Software Asset Management activities
  • Lead and coordinate RFP, RFQ and sourcing exercises
  • Negotiate commercial agreements with technology suppliers
  • Review contracts, statements of work and renewal documentation
  • Build trusted relationships with IT leadership teams and business stakeholders
  • Manage supplier performance and support vendor governance activities
  • Provide commercial advice on software, SaaS, cloud and technology services procurement
  • Support cost optimisation and value delivery initiatives across technology spend

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • 1 to 3 years' experience within procurement, sourcing, purchasing, or commercial roles
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience negotiating with suppliers or supporting commercial discussions
  • Ability to analyse information and make commercially sound recommendations
  • Desire to learn and develop knowledge of technology and IT procurement categories
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

Desirable

  • Experience within IT procurement, software sourcing or software asset management
  • Exposure to SaaS, cloud services or technology vendors
  • Experience managing professional services or consulting spend
  • Understanding of contracts, commercial terms and supplier management
  • Degree in Business, Supply Chain, Procurement, Technology, Engineering or a related discipline

What's on Offer

  • Salary of $80,000 to $95,000
  • Annual bonus opportunity of approximately 10% to 13%
  • Attractive 9/80 working pattern with every other Friday off
  • Significant exposure to senior technology leadership
  • Long-term career development within IT procurement and strategic sourcing
  • Opportunity to influence supplier strategy and technology spend decisions

Why Apply?

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, negotiating with suppliers, and wants to develop expertise in one of the fastest-growing procurement categories. You'll gain hands-on experience across software, cloud and technology sourcing while working in an environment that offers genuine progression and learning opportunities.
