Entry-Level Patent Attorney โ€“ Mechanical Engineering

Kim Intellectual Property Law Group (Kim IP), a growing intellectual property law firm based in New Jersey, is seeking an Entry-Level Patent Attorney with a background in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline to join our patent practice.

This position is an excellent opportunity for a new or recently admitted attorney who wants to build a career in intellectual property law while working directly with experienced patent attorneys, sophisticated clients, and a broad range of technologies.

The Position

The successful candidate will work with experienced patent attorneys and receive hands-on experience in all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution. Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications;
  • Assisting with international patent prosecution and global patent portfolios;
  • Reviewing invention disclosures and conducting inventor interviews;
  • Conducting patentability and prior-art analyses;
  • Assisting with freedom-to-operate, clearance, and other patent-related analyses;
  • Developing patent prosecution strategies;
  • Communicating with clients, inventors, and foreign counsel; and
  • Gaining increasing responsibility for client matters as experience and skills develop.

Kim IP represents clients across a wide range of technologies and industries. The position therefore provides an opportunity to develop experience with diverse mechanical and electromechanical technologies while building the technical, legal, and client-management skills necessary for a successful patent practice.

Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • A J.D. from an accredited law school;
  • A bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline;
  • Admission to the USPTO Patent Bar, or eligibility and willingness to obtain registration;
  • Admission to the New Jersey Bar, eligibility for admission, or willingness to obtain admission;
  • Strong academic credentials;
  • Excellent analytical, technical writing, and communication skills;
  • The ability to understand and explain complex technologies;
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; and
  • The ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of assigned matters.

Prior engineering or other relevant technical industry experience is a plus. Prior patent prosecution experience, including law firm, corporate, internship, clerkship, or law school experience, is also a plus but is not required.

Why Kim IP?

This is an opportunity to join an established and growing intellectual property practice where junior attorneys can obtain meaningful substantive experience early in their careers.

Kim IP provides opportunities to work directly with experienced patent attorneys, inventors, companies, universities, and other sophisticated clients.

We offer:

  • Hands-on training and mentorship from experienced patent attorneys;
  • Early involvement in substantive patent preparation and prosecution;
  • Direct exposure to clients and inventors;
  • Experience with both U.S. and international patent portfolios;
  • Opportunities to work across a variety of technologies and industries;
  • Increasing responsibility and client contact as experience develops;
  • A collegial, team-oriented work environment; and
  • A platform for long-term professional development and growth within the firm.

This is a full-time position based in our New Jersey office.

Kim Intellectual Property Law Group is an equal opportunity employer.
