Position Summary:

This is the first level of the Relay Technician hierarchy. A Learner Relay Tech will assist a higher-level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence. A Transmission Relay Tech I will assist a higher level technician and sometimes safely lead a lower level technician in activities associated with relay construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity

Learner Relay Technician performs the following with Direct Oversight:
  • Firm grasp safe work practices and safety culture.

  • Understanding the fundamentals of Human Performance Tools and requirements.

  • Understanding the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, communications.

  • Basic isolation procedure writing.

  • Demonstrates good verbal communications skills.

  • Firm grasp of print reading, red mark process.

  • Understanding of RTS and its use.

  • Understanding of ASPEN and reporting.

  • Complete understanding NERC compliance and importance for accurate data and timely completion.

  • Basic trouble shooting skills.

  • Develops the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order.

  • Basic understanding of CT and VT circuits.

  • Exposure to Carrier and Tone equipment.

Key Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call out rotation.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Assists in the submittal of accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Basic written and oral communication skills.

  • Must have a valid State Driver's License.

  • Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance.

  • Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test.

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet.

Required/Basic Qualifications for Learner Relay Tech
  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology

  • In lieu of Associate's degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND two (2) or more years related work experience

Required/Basic Qualifications for Trans Relay Tech I
  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology

  • In addition to required degree, one (1) or more years related work

  • In lieu of Associate's degree(s) AND one (1) or more years related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND three (3) or more years related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Assists in the submittal of accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Basic written and oral communication skills.

  • Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location.

Working Conditions
  • Onsite Mobility Classification - Work will be performed at a designated company facility.

  • Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call out rotation.

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. for 100 feet.

  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

  • This position is based out on North and South Carolina

Specific Requirements
  • Must have a valid State Driver's License

  • Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance.

  • Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test.
