Description:
The Surgical Technologist 1 functions in the inter-operative phase of patient care.
This role expedites surgical procedures under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
The position assists the surgical team by using equipment and instrumentation.
It ensures the operating room environment is safe.
Required equipment must be available and functioning properly.
Key responsibilities include discussing any special needs with the surgeon before surgery.
The technologist prepares the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping when needed.
They prepare and maintain the instrument table in an organized manner.
Identifying damaged or incomplete trays and rectifying discrepancies is essential.
The role includes setting up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules.
The technologist arranges sterile setups for specific procedures.
They ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments and supplies during procedures.
The surgical technologist performs counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items.
Anticipating the needs of the surgical team and passing sterile supplies during procedures is expected.
They assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient.
Receiving and passing surgical specimens according to protocol is part of the role.
Assistance with placement of surgical dressings is required after surgical case completion.
Disassembling surgical instrumentation at the end of the procedure is necessary.
The technologist prepares soiled instrumentation for transportation to the decontamination area.
They ensure cleaning and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment for distribution.
Following each case, cleaning the operating room and returning equipment is expected.
Adhering to infection control policies and regulatory requirements is essential for safety.
Successful candidates will complete a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program.
Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique is necessary.
Good verbal and written communication skills are important for interaction with team members.
Occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards may occur.
