At Technical Consulting Solutions (TCS), Inc., our team of professionals tackles many of our countryโ€™s most difficult engineering and technology challenges to further our countryโ€™s defense and space programs. This position supports the United States Armyโ€™s Integrated Air and Missile Defense [IAMD] Battle Command System (IBCS). This system is used to protect the US and our allies from air and missile threats. This program is used to integrate numerous air and missile defense systems (THAAD, PATRIOT, PAC-3, IFPC) with various radars and sensors to effectively manage and operate these defensive weapon systems through a seamless battlefield management system.

Positions require US citizenship, an existing DoD clearance (Secret or higher), and onโ€‘site work at our customer facility in Huntsville, Alabama (telework is not available).

Job Description:

TCS is searching for a Technical Editor and Writer in Huntsville, AL to serve as the lead senior technical editor/writer services for the IBCS team in the development of operator, maintainer, and software configuration manuals.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven skillset to concisely and clearly write, rewrite, and edit technical documentation such as Operator/Maintainerโ€‘level technical manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service and maintenance manuals, operator procedures, and formal documentation as may be required. Candidates should be able to translate and clearly communicate technical specifications and instructions for a wide range of audiences using ArborText Editor (v 7 or higher) and AMCOMโ€™s Interactive Authoring and Display System (IADS).

Additionally, experience with UltraEdit, Beyond Compare, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and SharePoint are necessary. The candidate should be able to acquire subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals. Candidate will also need to participate in the preparation of illustrative materials, drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts and conduct quality review of materials, provides statuses and reports as required to lead technical writer or representatives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in communications, English, or related field and six years of applicable experience OR four yearsโ€™ applicable experience with a masterโ€™s degree OR eight years of applicable experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • MUST currently hold and be able to maintain a DoD SECRET clearance.
  • Must be a quick learner, selfโ€‘starter, and display the ability to function in a fastโ€‘paced environment.
  • MUST be extremely familiar with the use of DoD specification MIL-STD-40051-*, MIL-HDBK-1222*, MIL-PRF-63002*, MIL-STD-38784, & MIL-STD-2361.
  • MUST be proficient in the use of Arbortext Editor, MS Office Suite, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • MUST be proficient in the use of the Interactive Authoring Display System (IADS).
  • MUST be proficient in XML tagging for pagedโ€‘based and frameโ€‘based technical manual development.
  • MUST be proficient in the function and use of Document Type Definitions (DTDs), style sheets, and associated Live DTDs.
  • MUST be able to utilize appropriate DTDs, Style Sheets, and xml specifications to create, write, edit, review, finalize, and publish Operator and Maintainer Field and Sustainment level ETMs and IETMs as well as SUMS, SAMs, and TBs.
  • MUST have the ability to research, review, and understand technical information, interpret engineering drawings, and develop procedural information for technical documentation.
  • MUST have strong familiarity with managing documents written for multiple versions of hardware and software products through multiple revision cycles.
  • MUST be able to actively participate in Logistics Maintenance Demonstration and Verification events to ensure accuracy, usability, and compliance of IETMs/ETMs with contract requirements and associated specifications.
  • MUST possess strong oral and written communication skills and be able to prepare and present reports and presentations using MS Office products to coโ€‘workers, managers, and customers.
  • MUST be able to correctly explain or demonstrate all the Basic Qualifications listed above, when requested.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the creation, editing, review, finalization, and publishing of DMWRs, PMCs, LOs, MWOs, BDARs, and SBs pamphlets pocket guides, quick reference guides, and commercial pamphlets across multiple services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard).
  • Experienced developing technical materials in an agile software developmental framework environment with daily scrums and monthly sprints.
  • Familiarity with Virtual computing environment.
  • Familiarity with file management practices and Microsoft SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of XSL creation/modification to transform and extract data from xml files.
  • Knowledge of Government Printing Office (GPO) style guide.
  • Knowledge of Beyond Compare, Ultra Edit, and XMLSpy software.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and potentially climb onto large vehicles or systems. May occasionally be required to lift to 50 pounds.
  • Have the ability to multitask on more than one project at a time.
  • Have the ability to work with a group or independently and be able to complete assigned tasks within the required deadlines.
