What is a technical skill?

Technical skills are the specialized knowledge and abilities required to perform specific tasks, often related to science, engineering, IT, or other technical fields. These skills can include proficiency in programming languages, operating machinery, using software applications, or understanding complex systems. Employers often look for technical skills that match the requirements of a particular job, as they demonstrate a candidate's ability to handle the technical aspects of the role. Technical skills are typically gained through education, training programs, or hands-on experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a technical skill role, and why are they important?

To excel in a technical skill role, you generally need specialized knowledge in your area (such as programming, data analysis, or engineering), often supported by relevant education or certifications. Familiarity with common industry tools, platforms, or programming languages (like Python, SQL, or CAD software) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication set outstanding technical professionals apart. These competencies ensure work accuracy, efficiency, and the ability to collaborate and adapt in dynamic technical environments.

How do professionals in technical skill roles typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals?

Professionals with technical skills often work closely with colleagues from various departments, such as product management, design, and marketing, to ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. Effective collaboration usually involves regular meetings, clear communication about project requirements, and a willingness to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical team members. Building strong relationships across teams not only streamlines workflow but also helps resolve challenges quickly, making it essential for technical professionals to develop both technical and interpersonal skills.

This is a full-cycle role with a strong sourcing expectation, embedded in a collaborative team that operates with high standards. It is not a siloed position. WHAT YOU'LL DOย

  • Manage and execute full-cycle searches across CTC's technology function.ย
  • Build and maintain proactive sourcing pipelines through direct outreach, networking, creative job postings, employee referrals, and market research, not just inbound applicants or search firms.ย
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to develop job descriptions, search strategies, and interview plans. ย
  • Develop fluency in our business, culture and teams to understand what great talent looks like across technology at all career levels, from Associate Engineer through Principal ย
  • Thoughtfully lead candidate debrief and calibration sessions, ensuring alignment between interviewers, hiring managers, and other key stakeholders.ย
  • Manage candidate experience from first contact through offer with accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism.ย
  • Bring a team-first mentality by sharing market intelligence, collaborating on initiatives, and investing in the growth of those around you to build a recruiting team the business trusts and values.ย
  • Partner closely with the HCM Practice Leader/HR Business Partner to provide exceptional and seamless service to our internal clients ย
  • Weave AI into all aspects of the recruiting processย

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • ~5+ years of recruiting experience with strong preference for experience at quant hedge funds or prop trading firmsย
  • Ideal candidate has spent time in both search firm and corporate recruiting environmentsย
  • Demonstrated strength in direct sourcing, with a track record of proactive outreach and pipeline developmentย
  • Track record of successfully vetting candidates for technical ability as well as cultural attributes ย
  • Deep understanding of technical skill sets and how these contribute to a prop trading firm or quant hedge fund ย
  • Values the success of the team above personal recognitionย
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully utilizing behavioral interviews ย
  • Operates with a high sense of urgency ย
  • Fluency with technical assessment tools such as Codility and CoderPad ย
  • Strong communicator who can engage sophisticated technical and business audiencesย
  • Organized, accountable, and capable of managing multiple searches without dropping the ballย
  • Chicago (preferred) or New York required. Hybrid in-office (Monday-Thursday in office) ย
