Job description

Description

The Library Student Assistant supports the daily operations of Lightner Library by assisting in a variety of areas, including the Circulation Desk, Interlibrary Loan (ILL), Archives, and Technical Services, as needed. This position is responsible for performing routine tasks and providing general support to library staff to ensure smooth and efficient service for patrons. The Library Student Assistant may also be assigned additional duties as required. This is a 9-month position, with the expectation of availability and commitment during both the fall and spring semesters.


Essential Responsibilities:

Circulation Desk: Answer the telephone and direct calls, assist library patrons or direct them to appropriate staff members, Check library materials in and out, Shelve and shift library materials, and Shelf reading.

Technical Services: Process new books by affixing spine labels, and Process materials for withdrawal from the collection.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Archives: Locate ILL requested materials and prepare for shipment, Scan and ship materials electronically, Create/set up library display cases, and Research archive requests.

Responsible for ensuring that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.

Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.

Perform other functions as assigned by management.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Keuka College student in the traditional undergraduate on-campus program.

Ability to work independently and to follow library procedures.

Excellent customer service skills, reliability, and detail oriented.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Computer literacy.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Always understand and behave with a high level of integrity and complete confidentiality.

Ability to be sensitive to and respond to needs/concerns of students, faculty, college staff and the public.


 Scheduling Requirements 

  •  Evening and weekend availability required. 

 Physical Requirements 

  •  Frequent use of computers, including typing and viewing a monitor.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and move throughout the library as needed.
  • Ability to push/pull book carts and occasionally lift or move materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Fine motor skills sufficient for handling library materials, shelving, filing, and operating office equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive organizational and clerical tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with library staff and patrons in person, by phone, and electronically.
