Job description

Position Summary

Fondren Library at Rice University seeks a Technical Services Operations Assistant. The position's primary functions are to support the Technical Services Department through preservation activities, purchasing, facilities coordination, and departmental operations. Working under the supervision of the Preservation Librarian, the incumbent performs a variety of tasks related to the preservation of library materials in support of the department's preservation program. The position also serves as the department's central administrative resource, acting as the primary point of contact while coordinating office operations, communications, and administrative support.

The ideal candidate has a positive attitude and works effectively with colleagues across a wide range of functions. They possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative, and a service-oriented approach. They also demonstrate an interest in learning about preservation and the work of a library technical services department.

Workplace Requirements

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at Fondren Library. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the hiring salary is $18.00 - $19.50 an hour, depending on experience and skill set. Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience in library support, technical services, or a related field involving detailed manual tasks and the use of library systems.
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education above and beyond what is required may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.   
  • Skills:
    • Basic computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications
    • Ability to quickly learn and accurately use the library's primary software (ALMA).
    • Ability to learn and accurately use the library binding software (ABLE).
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Good customer service and interpersonal skills 
    • Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform various technical tasks
    • Manual dexterity and ability to work with hands.

Essential Functions

  • Performs preservation activities under the direction of the Preservation Librarian, including the care, repair, stabilization, and preparation of library materials using established procedures. 
  • Provides administrative support for the Technical Services Department, serving as the primary point of contact for visitors, vendors, and internal stakeholders. 
  • Provides operational and administrative support for departmental projects and initiatives. 
  • Maintains records related to the binding and processing of library materials. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
