What is a technical program product manager?

A Technical Program Product Manager (TPPM) is a professional who blends technical expertise with program and product management skills to lead complex projects, often in technology-driven organizations. They are responsible for defining product strategy, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring successful delivery of technical products or programs. TPPMs bridge the gap between engineering, product, and business teams, translating business requirements into technical solutions while managing timelines, resources, and risks. Their role typically involves a mix of product roadmapping, stakeholder communication, and technical project management.

How does a technical program product manager balance stakeholder expectations while managing multiple project timelines?

Technical Program Product Managers often work cross-functionally, collaborating with engineering, design, and business teams to align project goals and timelines. Balancing stakeholder expectations involves regularly communicating progress, proactively identifying and addressing risks, and negotiating priorities when resource constraints arise. Effective TPM-PMs use agile methodologies, maintain transparent documentation, and facilitate regular check-ins to ensure all teams are aligned and project milestones are met. This dynamic requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changes while keeping stakeholders informed and engaged.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Product Manager, you need a solid background in project management, product lifecycle knowledge, and technical expertise, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in software or systems development. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, project tracking tools like Jira, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are commonly required. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills help you align diverse teams and drive product success. These competencies are vital for delivering complex products on time and ensuring they meet both technical requirements and business objectives.

Job description

Job#: 3046620
Job Description:
Technical Program Product Manager - Technical Program Product Manager III
Location: North Reading, Massachusetts (Onsite)
COMPENSATION: $99-$109 HOURLY
Role Overview
The Material Program Manager (MPM) is responsible for driving end-to-end material readiness across all phases of the product lifecycle-from New Product Introduction (NPI) through beta builds and into General Availability (GA). This role serves as the critical bridge between engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing operations, ensuring that material strategies are aligned with product development milestones and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own and execute the Material Readiness Report, providing cross-functional visibility into material risk, lead times, supply health, and readiness-to-build status.
  • Drive material program governance including ECO-to-PO change management, ensuring engineering changes are translated into actionable supply chain execution without disrupting production schedules.
  • Develop and maintain material program mechanisms (dashboards, trackers, escalation frameworks) that enable proactive risk identification and mitigation.
  • Coordinate with engineering, procurement, contract manufacturing, and quality teams to manage BOM (Bill of Materials) maturity from prototype through volume production.
  • Lead material allocation decisions, resolve supply constraints, and drive root-cause corrective actions for material shortages or receipt holds.
  • Manage material phase-in/phase-out strategies aligned to engineering change orders and product revision schedules.
  • Establish and improve repeatable processes for material program management that scale across multiple concurrent programs.
  • Communicate material risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to senior leadership with clarity and data-driven insights.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 5+ years of experience in material program management, supply chain program management, or NPI/operations program management within a hardware product development environment (robotics, consumer electronics, industrial systems, or similar).
Technical Skills:
  • BOM Management and NPI Lifecycle Expertise: Demonstrated experience managing Bills of Materials across development phases (EVT/DVT/PVT or equivalent), including BOM maturity tracking, material qualification, and build readiness assessments.
  • ERP/MRP Systems Proficiency (e.g., Oracle, SAP, or equivalent): Ability to navigate procurement systems, track purchase orders, manage material demand signals, and interpret supply planning outputs.
  • Cross-Functional Program Management: Proven ability to lead and influence without authority across engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and quality organizations to drive material decisions and resolve constraints.
  • Data-Driven Risk Management and Reporting: Strong analytical skills to build and maintain material readiness dashboards, identify supply risks proactively, and communicate trade-offs to leadership using metrics and data (Excel/Smartsheet/BI tools).
