What types of projects and cross-functional collaborations can a technical product manager intern expect during their internship?

As a Technical Product Manager Intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve defining product requirements, analyzing user needs, and coordinating with engineering, design, and marketing teams. You may participate in sprint planning, feature prioritization, or user feedback sessions, gaining exposure to the full product development lifecycle. Collaboration is a key part of the role, as you'll regularly communicate with software developers, UX designers, and business stakeholders to ensure product features are built to meet business objectives and user needs. This environment provides valuable hands-on experience and insight into how different teams work together to deliver technology products.

What does a technical product manager intern do?

A Technical Product Manager Intern supports the product management team by helping to define product requirements, coordinate with engineering teams, and analyze user feedback. They work on the technical aspects of product development, such as creating specifications, prioritizing features, and assisting in the product lifecycle from concept to launch. This role provides hands-on experience in bridging the gap between technical teams and business goals, allowing interns to learn about product strategy, project management, and user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical product manager intern?

To thrive as a Technical Product Manager Intern, you need a foundational understanding of product development, strong analytical skills, and typically a background in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Full-time, Internship

Posted 22 days ago

Job description

Our Product Management team at Appian is passionate about technology - we love making it, and we love using it. We operate at the intersection of engineering precision, user-centric design, and business strategy within an Agile-led environment that values collaboration and personal growth. By joining our structured university cohort, you will work within a small team of engineers to build simple, powerful features that expand our AI-Powered Process Automation platform.

As a Product Manager Intern, you will transition your technical background into real-world software delivery. Moving beyond purely theoretical coursework, you will step in as an embedded product manager, collaborating with key stakeholders, defining acceptance criteria, and ensuring absolute Enterprise-Grade Orchestration with every iteration.

This internship is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Interns in this program are expected to be in the office 5 days a week to fully experience our culture, learn directly from peers and mentors, and contribute to projects in a collaborative environment. Being in the office provides more opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate with the exceptional people across Appian.

Applicants considered for Summer 2027 - Students Only

What You'll Do

  • Own the Agile Backlog: Act as the embedded product owner for a highly skilled engineering squad, taking charge of backlog prioritization, feature sizing, and iterative sprint planning.

  • Drive Collaborative Discovery: Share innovative ideas, analyze technical specifications, and gather continuous feedback through design sessions, user experience (UX) reviews, and usability mockups.

  • Define Product Roadmaps: Partner with senior product leaders to structure enterprise software roadmaps, balancing long-term strategic investments with rapid feature delivery.

  • Practice Stakeholder Negotiation: Empathize with conflicting stakeholder demands and developer constraints, applying data-driven negotiation skills to make optimal feature compromises.

  • Conduct Impact Analysis: Monitor post-launch usability metrics and track user success parameters to verify that new releases address true customer needs.

  • Participate in Passion Frameworks: Showcase your creative problem-solving skills during our department-led Hackathons and drive unique prototypes using dedicated Engineering Indie Time.

Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a strong academic record. Must be returning to school following the completion of the Summer 2027 internship to continue degree requirements.
  • Program Availability: Ability to commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) schedule for the duration of the 10-week summer program.
  • Proven fluency in AI and LLMs, encompassing both the strategic development of AI-powered platform capabilities and the hands-on application of AI tools to accelerate daily workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a technical internship or a portfolio of significant personal/academic projects.

At this time, Appian will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.

Thank you for your interest in joining our team! Please note that we will officially begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews starting August 2026. We appreciate your patience and look forward to connecting with you then.

At Appian, we embrace AI as part of how we work and innovate. While candidates are encouraged to use AI for preparation and learning, we restrict AI usage for live interviews and assessments unless otherwise specified. In some cases, AI use may be part of the assessment, and expectations will be communicated in advance.

This internship pays $50.00 per hour ($8,666 per month). Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation, bonus, or benefit plans.
