Job description

Job Description
This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete each section of the application, including prior job responsibilities, duties, and supplemental questions. While you may attach a resume, it will not replace a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The Transportation, Engineering & Operations (TE&O) Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a motivated Data & Operations Intern to support the County's Vision Zero and transportation safety initiatives. Working under the guidance of experienced professionals, the intern will assist with transportation data collection, field work, safety studies, operational reviews, and public engagement efforts. This internship provides hands-on experience using data, analysis, and field observations to support traffic safety strategies, evaluate safety countermeasures, and contribute to Arlington County's goal of eliminating serious and fatal roadway crashes.
Responsibilities
Major Job Duties:
  • Supporting Vision Zero and transportation safety initiatives through project-based assignments focused on traffic safety, transportation operations, and field analysis;
  • Assisting with transportation data collection, coordination, organization, and summarization related to field activities and safety studies;
  • Supporting field work and safety assessments, including before-and-after studies, operational reviews, and in-field observations;
  • Assisting with crash data analysis and identification of transportation safety trends under the guidance of engineering and operations staff;
  • Preparing data summaries, visualizations, maps, presentations, and other materials to support safety studies, reports, and public outreach efforts;
  • Supporting asset management activities, tracking systems, and work order coordination related to transportation safety and operations;
  • Assisting with public engagement efforts, including organizing materials and summarizing community feedback related to safety initiatives; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support Vision Zero, Transportation Engineering and Operations (TE&O), and departmental priorities.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and organizational skills and an interest in transportation safety, operations, or public infrastructure. Coursework or experience involving data analysis, field work, transportation systems, engineering, planning, or public sector initiatives is preferred, along with the ability to communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
Location: 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Arlington, VA 22201 (Bozman Government Center)

These roles are ideal for recent graduates and current graduate students with limited professional experience who are looking to kickstart their careers.
Interns gain hands-on experience supporting key County initiatives while participating in a structured cohort-based development program. Throughout the year, interns work under the mentorship of senior staff, contributing fresh ideas, improving processes, and leveraging technology to enhance organizational effectiveness, all while familiarizing themselves with a public-sector environment.

  • Experience with data analysis or visualization, including use of Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI/Tableau, GIS, or similar tools; and/or

You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant's driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.
Letter of Interest: A complete application includes a letter of interest. Please attach your letter to this application detailing your background and experience and how they have prepared you for this position.

Please complete each section of the application including the supplemental questions. Your responses to the supplemental questions are required because they provide us with specific information necessary to evaluate your qualifications for this position. These responses are considered part of the selection process. A resume may be attached; however, it will not substitute for a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The pay range listed above is effective July 1, 2026.
