While hands-on coding remains an important aspect, you'll also be responsible for code reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating with product managers and stakeholders to align technical efforts with business goals. Successfully balancing these responsibilities requires strong communication skills and the ability to delegate tasks effectively, ensuring both project progress and team development. Many Technical Leads find that as projects progress, their focus may shift more toward leadership and less on day-to-day coding, but maintaining technical proficiency is still essential.

Job description

Omitron is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for software development supporting Cross Domain Solution (CDS) data transformation capabilities within the CROWN program at our Colorado Springs, CO, location. This role will serve as the technical authority for the development team, guiding architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and ensuring delivery of secure, reliable, and maintainable software solutions.
The Lead Engineer will work closely with program management, systems engineering, and government stakeholders to translate operational requirements into robust software implementations supporting secure data exchange across mission systems. These systems require high levels of correctness, traceability, and reliability due to their role in enforcing secure data transfer across operational environments.
This position operates in a hybrid work environment, and regular in-office presence is required to support integration, testing, and team leadership responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership and accountability for the architecture and delivery of CDS data transformation capabilities
  • Own the architecture and technical direction for data transformation and cross-domain data processing systems
  • Define and enforce schema design, validation, and data integrity approaches to ensure reliable and compliant cross-domain data transfer
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and technical guidance
  • Collaborate with program management, systems engineering, and government customers to refine requirements and deliver mission-aligned solutions
  • Oversee planning, estimation, and execution of development tasks within Agile or hybrid development cycles, including structured integration and validation phases
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, including coding practices, automated testing, and configuration management
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to maintain program schedule and technical performance
  • Remain hands-on, contributing to the design and implementation of critical system components
  • Coordinate integration and testing activities with DevOps engineers and test teams
  • Prepare and present technical briefings and status updates to program stakeholders
  • Ensure correctness, validation, and traceability of data transformations across system boundaries
  • Drive long-term maintainability, consistency, and evolution of the CDS software architecture
  • Provide critical evaluation of design approaches and implementation decisions, ensuring alignment with architectural goals and long-term maintainability

Minimum Requirements:
  • US Citizenship required
  • Security Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience: 8+ years of professional software development experience
    • At least 2 years serving as a technical lead, senior engineer, or development team lead
    • Demonstrated experience leading software development teams and guiding architectural decisions
    • Strong experience developing software using modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++, or similar)
    • Experience designing systems that process structured data formats (XML, XSD, DFDL, JSON, fixed-width, or binary encodings)
    • Experience using Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines
    • Experience implementing automated testing strategies including unit and integration testing
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders
    • Demonstrated ability to make and defend architectural decisions in a collaborative engineering environment
    • Experience working in Agile development environments

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • Experience supporting DoD or other government software programs
  • Experience with Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), data transformation frameworks, or schema-based data validation technologies
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and secure software development environments
  • Experience supporting software accreditation or RMF-related engineering activities
  • Experience with GitLab and Atlassian toolsets (JIRA, Confluence)
  • Background in space, aerospace, or command-and-control software systems
  • Current DoD Security Clearance

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $150,000 to $185,000, depending on relevant experience, location, and other factors.
