Surface Mount Assembly Operator - Reflow

Our client is a manufacturer of RF Technology products. They are looking for a Surface Mount Assembly Operator - Reflow to join their team.

Position Title: Surface Mount Assembly Operator - Reflow

Dayshift: 7am-3:30pm Mon-Fri

Permanent after 3 months of probation

Location: Etobicoke, ON (Brown Line/Horner ave)

Payrate: To start is $20.00 per hour

The Electronics Assembler plays a key role in the production of high-precision electronic components and systems. This position involves assembling, soldering, and inspecting electronic parts and circuit boards while adhering to detailed work instructions and quality standards. The ideal candidate has strong fine-motor skills, experience with hand soldering and electronic assembly, and is comfortable working in a cleanroom or controlled environment.

Responsibilities:

1. Solder and manually place components such as resistors, diodes, transistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, wires and other electronic parts to designated locations or printed circuit board
2. Use air vac and soldering iron to manually repair electronic components
3. Install, mount, fasten, align and adjust parts, components, wiring and harness to subassemblies and assemblies using hand and small power tools
4. Operate automatic and semi-automatic machines to position, solder and clean components on printed circuit boards
5. Work from specified drawings to solder and manually assemble electronic components onto circuit boards requiring fine hand assembly
6. Place components on the board by hand and proceed to prepare the circuit board
7. Operate reflow hot-plate

Education:

Completion of High School

Skills/Requirements:

1. 1 to 3 years’ experience in electronics assembly or related field.
2. Experience in reading blueprints an asset.
3. Know military and industry quality standards.
4. Familiar with ESD and clean room electronic industry practices.
5. Excellent hand/ eye coordination handling electronic components using microscopes.
6. Must have ability to work with hand, small tools, and microscopes.
7. Able to work effectively in a team environment.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) processes and equipment (pick-and-place machines, screen printers, reflow ovens, AOI/X-ray inspection).
• Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOM), work instructions, and soldering standards (e.g., IPC-A-610).
• Hand soldering skills for rework and touch-up of SMT and through-hole components.
• Understanding of component identification (resistors, capacitors, ICs, diodes, etc.) and polarity orientation.
• Familiarity with solder paste application and stencil alignment.
• Use of measurement tools (calipers, microscopes, magnifiers) for inspection and quality verification.
• Knowledge of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) handling procedures.
• Basic troubleshooting of SMT equipment and processes.

Quality & Compliance

• Knowledge of IPC standards for electronic assembly.
• Ability to recognize soldering defects (bridges, cold solder joints, insufficient/ excess solder).
• Understanding of quality assurance practices and continuous improvement.
• Compliance with workplace safety, cleanliness, and 5S standards.

Soft Skills

• Attention to detail and accuracy in handling miniature components.
• Strong manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
• Problem-solving ability for process or assembly issues.
• Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures precisely.
• Communication skills for reporting issues to supervisors or engineers.
• Teamwork and collaboration in a production environment.
