The role requires both artistic understanding and technical proficiency.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a technical artist intern?

Technical Artist Interns can expect to spend their days supporting the art and development teams by creating, optimizing, and troubleshooting visual assets and tools for game or application projects. Responsibilities often include implementing shaders, resolving asset integration issues, running quality checks on artistic content, and collaborating closely with both artists and engineers to streamline production pipelines. Interns may also assist in automating repetitive tasks or developing custom scripts to improve workflow efficiency. This hands-on role offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the intersection of art and technology, making it an excellent stepping stone to more advanced technical art roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the technical artist intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Artist Intern, you need a mix of artistic ability and technical skills, such as familiarity with 3D modeling, scripting, and an understanding of real-time rendering pipelines, typically supported by coursework or training in game development, computer graphics, or similar fields. Experience with industry-standard tools like Maya, Unity, Unreal Engine, and scripting languages (such as Python or MEL) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for this position. These skills enable Technical Artist Interns to bridge the gap between artists and programmers, ensuring efficient workflows and high-quality visual outcomes in technical environments.

  • Create clean skinweight and blendweight maps
  • Write Python code to automate tasks, create procedural setups, and improve workflow efficiency
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve character rigging related errors across tools and the game
  • Collaborate with a team of other technical artists to support art teams directly
  • Work closely with engineers and collaborate with multiple art departments to address feedback notes and make art asset requests
  • Contribute to documentation, workflows, and pipeline improvements that scale across the team

Who Will Be A Great Fit:

  • Strong expertise in Autodesk Maya

  • Familiar with joint placement and designing skeleton setups
  • Experience in creating character rigs that are optimized for games
  • Knowledge of good topology and proper edge-flow to create natural deformation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Love for video games (not just ours!)

Nice To Have:

  • Working with NgSkinTools for weight painting
  • Familiar creating UIs with Qt
