Job description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for completing technical duties in the preparation of the surgical room and patients. The incumbent cleans and inspects the surgery room prior to and after the surgical procedure, obtains supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure to be performed, prepares the surgical patient and assists the surgeon during the surgical procedure by providing the surgical instrument necessary to perform the procedure. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Prepares patient for surgery by cleansing and shaving the surgery site, and provides information to patient to educate them on the surgery performed;
  • Inspects, cleans and prepares surgical room prior to patient's arrival and after the surgical procedure;
  • Obtains supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure to be performed;
  • Cleans and sterilizes surgical equipment and instruments;
  • Tests the equipment to ensure that it is functioning;
  • Organizes surgical instruments and equipment so that it is in proper order;
  • Counts the instruments, sutures, sponges and other materials to be used during the procedure, prior to and after the surgical procedure;
  • Assists surgical team with performing quality and efficiency of the surgical process by assisting with data collection, planning for corrective action and implementing the plan;
  • Assists the surgeon performing the surgical procedure by applying dressings, cutting sutures, and retrieving the appropriate surgical instrument required to perform the surgical task;
  • Assists in lifting and moving patients with limited mobility.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the sterilization requirements for surgical equipment, supplies and instruments; good knowledge of the surgical equipment, supplies and instruments used to perform surgery; working knowledge of quality patient care activities preparing individuals for surgery; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for Surgical Technologists and holds and maintains a certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited Surgical Technologist credentialing organization; or
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or
  • Was employed as a Surgical Technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current valid Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
