BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, Perioperative Coordinator/Educator, Staff RN/OR Charge RN, the Surgical Technician assists in the care and preparation of the patient for surgery.  Responsibilities include scrubbing for surgical procedures, maintaining and ordering supplies, and housekeeping duties, as directed.  Takes call as assigned by the Director of Surgical Services. Must maintain BLS certification.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Understands and demonstrates principles of sterile technique.
  2. Assure that supplies and equipment needed for surgical case are available and in working order.
  3. Correctly sets up and opens surgical suite with all the necessary instruments, supplies and packs.  Arranges table according to surgeon preference and type of procedure.
  4. Assists with prepping and draping surgical patient.
  5. Able to anticipate the needs of the surgeon in instrumentation, suture, sponges and supplies during case.
  6. Maintains correct needle, instrument and sponge counts with the circulator.  Reports discrepancies.
  7. Assists with the maintenance and care of specimens.
  8. Decontaminates instruments and equipment according to policy.
  9. Assist in cleaning and turnaround of surgical suite following cases
  10. Ensures supplies are checked for outdates and assists OR Materials Handler in maintaining proper par levels.

11.         Restocks supplies in proper location when delivered from storeroom.

  1. Correctly pulls cases for next day.
  2. Performs required departmental cleaning using cleaning checklist.
  3. Assists with writing policies and procedures for surgery department.
  4. Maintains preference cards based upon current physician practice and initiates new cards as needed.
  5. Responsible for checking emails and on line learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.
  6. Serves on ad hoc committees as requested by the Director.
  7. Any other duties as assigned by Director within legal limit.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of approved Surgical Technician program or certification as Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Maintains current BLS certification, through American Heart Association.
  • Must be computer literate to complete task (s), as required. Physical:
  • Able to stand/walk intermittently through a 7.75, 9.75, or 11.75 hour day.
  • Able to bend to reach items on the floor, desk level, and overhead.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently, unassisted.
  • Able to move and ambulate patients, using good body mechanics, unassisted.
  • Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
  • Able to communicate verbally interpersonally and over the telephone in a clear voice.
  • Dexterity necessary to write legibly.
