Tech Pack Designer information

What is a tech pack designer?

A Tech Pack Designer is responsible for creating detailed technical documents, known as tech packs, that guide manufacturers in producing apparel, footwear, or accessories. These documents include specifications like measurements, materials, stitching details, colors, and construction guidelines. The role requires strong design skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in software like Adobe Illustrator. Tech Pack Designers work closely with product developers and manufacturers to ensure designs are accurately translated into final products.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a tech pack designer?

As a Tech Pack Designer, your daily tasks usually involve creating and updating detailed tech packs that specify garment construction, materials, measurements, and trims for manufacturing. You'll work closely with designers, product developers, and factories to ensure that all design specifications are clearly documented and understood. Reviewing samples, addressing feedback, and revising technical documents are also common parts of the workflow. This role demands strong organization and communication skills to manage multiple styles and collaborate with both creative and technical teams effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech pack designer?

To thrive as a Tech Pack Designer, you need a solid background in fashion design, garment construction, and technical drawing, often supported by a degree in fashion or a related field. Mastery of design software such as Adobe Illustrator, knowledge of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems, and familiarity with garment manufacturing standards are essential. Strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams help Tech Pack Designers stand out. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate, production-ready documentation that facilitates efficient communication between design, development, and manufacturing teams.

At The North Face, we believe exploration pushes us forward! As the Men's Apparel Designer, you'll help shape the next generation of performance and performance-inspired apparel, creating innovative products that enable athletes and adventurers to thrive in the world's most demanding environments. This is an opportunity to bring creativity, technical expertise, and a passion for the outdoors to one of the most iconic brands in the industry.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Support the Men's Apparel Design Team in elevating design expression and creating best-in-industry performance and performance-inspired apparel. Contribute to the creation and execution of seasonal product design and creative vision.

  • Design and develop products built for Snow, Climb, and Trail, as well as lifestyle products inspired by these categories.

  • Assist the design team with seasonal research, tool updates, concept development, product design, and tech pack creation.

  • Execute moderately complex product design work, including seasonal research and insights, presentation tools, concept development, design deliverables, and product execution.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to bring products to life.

  • Create and develop a broad range of products in partnership with design leadership.

  • Present design work during seasonal go-to-market milestones while actively giving and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Apply a solid understanding of brand aesthetic, DNA, materials, technologies, fit, silhouette, and cost engineering to support consumer and business needs across both performance-led and performance-inspired products.

  • Contribute to team reviews, workshops, and key milestones while demonstrating a passion for craftsmanship, detail, and continuous learning.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Knowledge of outerwear and sportswear design, construction, and materials.

  • Strong product acumen with working knowledge of the apparel creation process, including design, development, sourcing, and manufacturing.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office.

  • Strong sketching, technical design, and tech pack creation skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Experience conducting research, ideation, prototyping, and concept development across performance and lifestyle products.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proactive problem-solver with a values-driven approach to balancing consumer, product, and business needs.

  • Demonstrated agility, adaptability, and comfort navigating change.

  • Growth mindset with a passion for learning new tools, processes, and ways of working.

There are also a few skills that are not required but preferred.
