Tech Director information

What is a tech director?

A Tech Director, short for Technical Director, is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of a company or specific project. They lead technical teams, make high-level decisions about technology infrastructure, and ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. Tech Directors often collaborate with other departments, manage budgets, and stay up-to-date with emerging technologies to keep their organization competitive. Their role can vary by industry, but it generally involves a combination of leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tech Director?

To thrive as a Tech Director, you need a robust background in software development, IT infrastructure, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree and leadership experience. How does a tech director typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Tech Director regularly works with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and operations, to ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. They facilitate communication between developers and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies. This role often involves leading technical reviews, setting project priorities, and supporting interdepartmental initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency across the organization.

Our Story & Purpose:

Weโ€™re Vancity, a member-owned credit union built on the principles of inclusion and social justice. Since 1946, our relentless commitment to these values has helped us challenge the status quo and break down barriers. Weโ€™ve made bold commitments to become net-zero by 2040 across all mortgages and loans, and weโ€™re actively pursuing strategies in Indigenous banking and financial resilience for our members.

As the largest private sector Living Wage Employer in Canada, weโ€™re proud to be consistently recognized as one of the countryโ€™s Top Employers. If youโ€™re ready to join our team of 2,300 diverse individuals, access competitive rewards and benefits, and be part of a greater movement - apply today!
Your Role in Supporting Our Members:

We are seeking a Director, Payments Technology, to lead the technical, strategy, design, and delivery of Vancityโ€™s end-to-end payments ecosystem. This is a senior hands-on technology leadership role accountable for modernizing payment rails across retail, SMB, and commercial members, strengthening fraud technology platforms, and ensuring compliance with Payments Canada and Interac modernization mandates, while working closely with business partners to translate strategy into scalable, secure, and resilient technology solutions.

This role will lead Vancityโ€™s transition from legacy Interac e-Transfer implementations to RTR connectivity, working with Payments Canada and industry partners to embed evolving mandates into a multi-year technology roadmap. A core component of this mandate is building and evolving a robust fraud engine that enables real time detection, proactive prevention, and secure by design payment experiences that reinforce member trust across all channels.

This is a Fulltime, Permanent role based and will report directly to the VP, Digital and Technology Platforms. Our head office is based in Vancouver, but we are open to candidates in BC and Ontario. While this position is for an existing vacancy and provides a remote work arrangement, you will be expected to be onsite for events and business demands.ย
How You'll Make an Impact:

  • Defining and executing the enterprise payments and fraud technology roadmap across Interac, RTR, ANR, EFT/ACSS, Lynx, and related Payments Canada initiatives
  • Engaging with Payments Canada to translate mandates, rule changes, and modernization milestones into executable delivery plans
  • Modernizing payment rails supporting retail, SMB, and commercial members including Interac (v3.x through v3.7), EFT, RTR, card networks, and SWIFT
  • Delivering RTR connectivity including real time routing, clearing, and settlement capabilities
  • Owning the evolution of the enterprise fraud engine including real time scoring, decisioning platforms, transaction monitoring, and case management
  • Ensuring fraud controls are embedded directly into payment journeys to prevent losses while preserving seamless member experience and trust
  • Ensuring tight integration across payment flows, fraud platforms, core banking systems, and digital channels
  • Partnering with architecture to define target state payments and fraud platforms aligned with cloud strategy and core modernization
  • Leading cross functional teams delivering complex payments and fraud modernization initiatives

What Youโ€™ll Bring to the Team:

  • 10+ years of experience in financial services technology with deep expertise in payment rails and fraud systems
  • Hands-on experience delivering Interac e-Transfer, RTR, ANR, EFT/ACSS, and related national payment rails
  • Demonstrated experience designing and operating enterprise fraud engines, real time decisioning systems, and secure transaction platforms
  • Azure Full-Stack experience: CSS/HTML, React / Angular, Azure Web App Services, Java & JavaScript, Python, SQL/databases, RESTย APIsย
  • Working knowledge ofย nCino andย SalesForceย
  • Understanding of cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure), API development, microservicesย architecture
  • Strong understanding of platform architecture and integration technologies
  • Working knowledge of DevOps principles. Experience with monitoring tools like Splunk and Grafanaย ย
  • Strong knowledge of Payments Canada modernization programs including RTR, Lynx, ACSS, and ISO 20022
  • Experience embedding fraud by design into digital and payment experiences to strengthen member trust and reduce losses
  • Proven experience translating regulatory and business requirements into executable payments and fraud technology roadmaps

Youโ€™ll Thrive Here If You Are:

  • A strategic and hands-on technology leader โ€“ Moving comfortably between setting an enterprise payments and fraud roadmap and diving into technical details across RTR, Interac, EFT/ACSS, Lynx, and core banking integration.
  • A payments and fraud domain expert โ€“ Bringing deep experience with national payment rails, ISO 20022, and enterprise fraud engines, and knowing how to translate complex mandates and rules into clear, executable plans.
  • A member-trust champion โ€“ Passionate about secure-by-design, real-time payments experiences that prevent fraud, reduce losses, and protect member confidence across all channels.
  • A collaborative influencer โ€“ Skilled at aligning architecture, risk, digital, operations, and external partners such as Payments Canada around a common modernization agenda.
  • A change-ready systems thinker โ€“ Energized by modernizing legacy platforms, navigating ambiguity, and orchestrating complex, cross-functional initiatives to deliver resilient and scalable solutions.

We value lived experience, so if you are interested in this role, we encourage you to apply even if you feel your skills don't perfectly align with those listed.

This role offers a salary range ofย $148,000 to $200,200 per annum. The base pay offered may vary depending on factors such as relevant qualifications, skills, previous experience, and internal equity.
