Job description

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a preceptor, Surgical Services Educator or department leadership provides surgical assistance in the operating room and assisting with departmental support activities following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

         Assists in preparing and setting up the operating room

         Assists surgical team during operative procedures

         Assists in terminal cleaning of operating rooms between cases and after the last case each day

         Creates and maintains sterile field for surgical procedures

         Assists with maintaining records, reports, and other documentation related to the work, including risk management and performance improvement reports.

         Seeks to improve quality of service by continuously developing individual and departmental competencies within scope of practice

            Required:

         High school diploma or equivalent;

         One day of Operating Room job shadowing

         BLS certification

 

Preferred:

         Surgical services or sterile processing experience

         Direct patient care experience.

 

Program Requirements:

         MedCerts online training - 288 hours

         In-Person OR simulation lab/sterile processing - minimum of 48 hours

         Completion of 125 cases with preceptor oversight. 

o   Apprenticeship program completed after successful completion of 125 cases.

         Certification as Tech in Surgery, TS-C (NCCT) within one year of completion of apprenticeship program.
