Job description
Located 36 miles east of Atlanta on Emory's original campus in Oxford, Georgia, Oxford College of Emory University invites applications for a postdoctoral teaching fellow in Biology and R programming, to begin in August 2025. The salary for the fellowship is $60,000, and Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows will be eligible for the same benefits as regular faculty. This position is annually renewable, for up to three years.
Position Description
The fellow will teach introductory courses in biology and R programming to first- and second-year undergraduate students, receive structured mentoring and professional development to prepare for a full-time faculty position at a teaching-intensive institution, receive training in inclusive pedagogy, support for research and grant writing, and have opportunities to engage in the academic, social, and cultural life of Oxford College.
We will consider applicants from a broad range of biological subfields, as long as the candidate has experience with data analysis in the R programming language. The successful candidate will teach both "Foundations of Modern Biology I" (which includes a lab and covers topics in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biodiversity, and evolution) and "Statistical Computing I" (an applied introduction to data analysis in R that does not require any formal computer science background to teach). The latter course is housed in the Quantitative Theory and Methods (QTM) department. The teaching load for this position will be the equivalent of one lecture and two lab sections (Biology) in the fall and up to three lecture sections (QTM) in the spring. Structured support and mentoring will be provided for both courses by senior members of the departments.
The goal of the postdoctoral teaching fellow program is to support the mentoring of fellows and equip them with skills for a full-time faculty position at a teaching intensive institution. As such, the primary focus of this program is to support the pedagogical development of the fellow and the advancement of a research program is not required or expected. However, interested fellows will also have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate research students, collaborate on research projects with existing faculty, and/or conduct independent research. Logistical and financial support is available for these endeavors.
Qualifications
Required - A recent Ph.D. in a biological science or a related discipline. The candidate must have the degree awarded no later than August 2025. Candidates must also have experience using R to analyze data.
Desirable - Knowledge of the tidyverse for data analysis and visualization in R. Candidates with demonstrated commitment to inquiry-based teaching and student-centered learning are particularly encouraged to apply.
Application Instructions
Candidates should submit the following via Interfolio:
- Cover letter (1-2 pages) that describes their qualifications for the position; how this position fits into their long-term career goals; as well as their interest in working at a liberal arts college with first- and second-year students
- Current curriculum vitae (CV)
- Statement of teaching (1-3 pages) that outlines the candidate's core classroom philosophies, strategies, and approaches; these should include how they will inclusively serve a diverse group of undergraduate students.
- Names and contact information of two potential references (candidates who advance to the semi-finalist stage will be asked to provide two letters of recommendation)
- Unofficial graduate school transcripts
- Please DO NOT include a separate research statement. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential to develop into excellent teachers. However, if this position offers any specific advantages to your research program you may mention these benefits briefly in the cover letter.
- Evaluation of candidates will begin March 1st, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries may be directed to Dr. Emily McLean (emily.mclean@emory.edu).
