Teaching Instructor information

What is a teaching instructor?

Teaching instructors are educational professionals responsible for delivering instruction, guiding student learning, and supporting academic development in a particular subject area. They may work in schools, colleges, universities, or training centers, and often design lesson plans, assess student progress, and provide feedback. While the specific duties can vary depending on the institution and level of education, teaching instructors play a crucial role in facilitating classroom learning and fostering an engaging educational environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a teaching instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Teaching Instructor, you need strong subject matter expertise, effective lesson planning abilities, and typically a relevant degree or teaching certification. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, classroom management tools, and curriculum development software is often required. Outstanding communication, patience, and adaptability help engage students and foster a positive learning environment. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering effective instruction and supporting diverse student needs.

How do teaching instructors typically collaborate with other faculty and staff in an educational institution?

Teaching Instructors often work closely with colleagues from their own departments as well as support staff, such as academic advisors and administrative personnel. Collaboration can include co-developing curriculum materials, participating in departmental meetings, and coordinating student assessments or extracurricular activities. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as instructors may need to align their teaching strategies or share feedback about student progress. This collaborative environment not only enriches the learning experience for students but also provides instructors with professional support and opportunities for interdisciplinary growth.

The Aqua Life Swim Academy

Kanata, ON โ€ข On-site

CA$23/hr

Full-time

Job description

If you are looking for a job where you show up, teach your lane, and go home, this is not it.

But if you are the kind of person who walks into a pool deck and naturally raises the energy, who notices when a new instructor is struggling and steps in without being asked, who genuinely cares whether every child in the water goes home more confident than when they arrived, keep reading.

We are looking for a Head Swim Instructor to lead our programs across our Kanata and Nepean locations. Someone who can teach, lead, inspire, and hold the standard when no one is watching.

THE ROLE

This is a dual role. You will be in the water teaching, and you will be the person your team looks to when things get complicated.

You will move between our Kanata and Nepean locations. Part of your work, scheduling, admin, reporting, can be done remotely. The rest is on deck, in person, with your team and your swimmers.

This position is available full-time or part-time depending on the right candidate. Hours will be discussed during the interview (weekend availability is essential). Starting at $23.00/hour.

Full-time employees who complete the three-month probationary period are enrolled in our group insurance benefits plan.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

On deck teaching

  • Deliver private and semi-private and group lessons to children and adults across Kanata and Nepean
  • Tailor every lesson to the swimmer in front of you, no two are the same
  • Track progress and communicate meaningfully with families after every lesson
  • Be the kind of instructor families call and ask for by name

On deck leading

  • Supervise, coach, and inspire your team of instructors across both locations
  • Observe lessons and give feedback that actually makes people better
  • Support the onboarding and training of new team members
  • Be part of the hiring process you know a great instructor when you see one
  • Hold the standard on deck safety, quality, professionalism, attitude
  • Be the first call when something goes sideways

With families

  • Connect with parents and build the kind of trust that keeps families with us for years
  • Handle concerns and escalations with empathy and confidence
  • Make every family feel that their child is exactly where they should be

Remotely

  • Scheduling, administrative tasks, and reporting done from wherever works for you
  • Keep records and scheduling up to date and accurate

WHO YOU ARE

You have been teaching swimming for at least 3 years and leading people for at least 2 years.

You do not need to be managed. You manage yourself.

Beyond that, the right person for this role:

  • Has a natural ability to lead without making it about authority
  • Is as patient with a nervous beginner as they are firm with a struggling instructor
  • Communicates with warmth and clarity with families, with instructors, with management
  • Takes ownership of problems instead of escalating everything upward
  • Has reliable personal transportation and is comfortable moving between Kanata and Nepean
  • Is organized enough to manage remote admin alongside a busy on-deck schedule

Certifications required:

  • Valid National Lifeguard (NL) certification
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • Swim Instructor certification and asset
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (required for 18 years and older)
  • Eligibility to work in Canada

WHY THE AQUA LIFE SWIM ACADEMY

  • Group benefits after probation for full-time staff
  • Flexibility part of this role is remote
  • A real leadership role with real impact across multiple locations
