Job Summary

The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for planning and leading safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes that help participants improve their overall health and wellness. Instructors motivate and inspire participants in a supportive, inclusive, fun environment while ensuring all Park District policies and safety standards are upheld. Instructor ensures proper maintenance and upkeep of group fitness equipment and studio spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Facility & Operations Supervisor:

  • Design and lead group fitness classes in a various formats (e.g. aerobics, strength, stretch, dance, yoga, mind-body, or specialty programs)
  • Clearly demonstrate exercises and provide modifications to meet various fitness levels. Demonstrate proper cueing progressions and regressions of movements to challenge returning participants and support first time participants.
  • Maintain awareness of participantโ€™s form, exertion, and safety during classes.
  • Foster a positive environment by building rapport with participants. Motivate and inspire participants to achieve their personal fitness goals.
  • Confirm attendance accurately, directing unregistered members to check in at the Fitness Desk.
  • Ensure all fitness equipment is properly cleaned, returned, and stored after each class.
  • Shut down audio equipment, fans and preparing studio for next class.
  • Report any maintenance, safety or equipment concerns.
  • Trained in and available to teach multiple formats is preferred.
  • Be available to teach early mornings.
  • Ability to work independently, to be self-motivated and maintain professionalism at all times.
  • Arrive before class start time. Begin and end class on time.
  • Secure a substitute instructor when unable to teach a scheduled class and notify the Fitness Desk.
  • Promote special events and Park District programs.
  • Attend requires staff meetings, trainings and certifications.
  • Maintain all required certifications and stay current with industry trends.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to ensure a smooth experience for members and guests
  • Must be flexible with days and times to meet member needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 18.
  • Current Group Fitness Certification from a nationally recognized organization (ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM, AEA, ASFA, Zumba, etc.) or equivalent.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching group fitness classes preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate and safely lead participants through exercise routines.
  • Strong understanding of exercise physiology, anatomy, and safe fitness principles.
  • Excellent communication, motivation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to change, and maintain professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialized certifications (e.g., Yoga, Chair Yoga, Zumba, Pilates, TRX, HIIT, Barre, Silver Sneakers, Strength Training, Cycle).
  • Experience teaching multiple class formats and levels.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and holistic wellness practices.

Psychological Considerations:

Group Fitness Instructor may feel stress from being held responsible for daily and numerous demands by staff and customers. This is a highly visible position with a great deal of public interaction.ย  The Group Fitness Instructor should respond to the needs of challenging individuals. He/She must maintain a positive approach to public service.

Physical Demands:

This position involves frequent walking, reaching, standing.ย  It also involves occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and crouching.ย  This person should have the ability to lift 10-30 lbs, depending on class discipline, without assistance.

Environmental Considerations:

There is a potential exposure to chronic infectious diseases.

Cognitive Considerations:

The Group Fitness Instructor must exhibit good problem-solving abilities and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Park District.
