Position Information

The School of Education provides initial preparation and continuing education opportunities to aspiring teachers, and other professional personnel engaged in educational activities in Guam, the Western Pacific region, and the U.S. mainland. Education opportunities are accomplished primarily through classroom instruction and related practicum activities monitored and coordinated by teaching faculty members. The students come from multi-cultural, multi-lingual environments, primarily from Pacific Island settings. An integral part of the School of Education's mission is becoming the academic, research, and service resource center for Guam and the greater Micronesian areas. The School of Education is currently accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality Educator Preparation (AAQEP).

The School of Education offers a master's degree with a specialization in Reading as an Online Program. This specialization is designed to prepare professionals in the field of reading/literacy who are interested in becoming highly effective teachers and specialists in reading and language arts. The Master of Education in Reading follows the International Literacy Association Standards representing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for literacy professionals (ILA, 2017). In addition, students are required to demonstrate their knowledge of contemporary research, evidence-based practices, curriculum and instruction, assessment and evaluation, diversity and equity, literacy environment, and leadership.

Full-Time

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience relevant to the position. The following salary figures are for nine (9) months:
Assistant Professor: $52,408 - $105,140 Per Academic Year
Associate Professor: $58,369 - $115,705 Per Academic Year

Compensation for employment shall not commence until all hiring conditions are met, including required employment visa. Annual salary will be prorated, if start of employment is delayed.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate expertise and scholarly productivity in areas related to literacy/reading (education, studies, and research); and to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in literacy/reading curricula. Additional duties will include continuous development and enhancement of graduate curricula through assessment, applied research, and scholarly activity. Maintain evidence of high-quality teaching and mentoring of students; pursue and maintain an active agenda of scholarly publications and presentations; participate in department, college, & university committees; provide service to the community and profession; maintain commitment to and evidence of fostering diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching, research and service activities; and cultivate community partnerships and relationships locally in Guam and the surrounding Micronesian region. The candidate will also fulfill responsibilities as the Program Chair of the M.Ed. in Reading program, and, in collaboration with the Advanced Education & Research Services Division, will provide leadership in program planning, accreditation, faculty coordination, student advising, and the ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of the program.

Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.
Federal law requires presentation of eligibility to work in the United States within seventy-two (72) hours of reporting for employment. Specifically, 8 USC 1324A requires the employer to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the United States of all newly hired employees. The University of Guam is required to comply with this law on a non-discriminatory basis.
