Purpose
The Graduate Office of Career & Life Design (OCLD) supports graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in developing the skills, experiences, and materials they need to thrive across academic and professional pathways. The Teaching and Academic Development Consultants will serve as embedded partners in this work, helping expand OCLD's capacity to support teaching development, academic job preparation, and evidence-based instructional practice. Working as peer educators, instructional coaches, and resource developers, consultants will facilitate workshops, provide course support, provide feedback on teaching-related materials, develop workshops and reusable resources, and support scalable programming that responds to emerging teaching and academic development needs across campus.
Responsibilities
Workshop, Course, & Program Support
- Facilitate or co-facilitate pedagogy workshops and courses as part of OCLD offerings: Teaching for Impact series, GRS097, department-requested programs, and other teaching and academic development initiatives.
- Support the planning, preparation, delivery, and follow-up for teaching and academic development workshops and events.
- Contribute to positive learning experiences for graduate student and postdoctoral scholar participants.
- Support course delivery, including curriculum development support, materials creation, and student assessment.
Resource Development and Curriculum & Instructional Design
- Develop curriculum, handouts, templates, Canvas content, eLearning/asynchronous modules, and other reusable resources that support graduate student and postdoctoral scholar teaching development.
- Adapt existing materials for different audiences, disciplines, and delivery formats.
- Review and refresh teaching-related resources to ensure they are current, accurate, accessible, and relevant.
Teaching & Academic Development Consultation and Feedback
- Provide individual and small-group consultations on evidence-based teaching practices and teaching-related academic job materials.
- Offer constructive feedback on teaching statements, syllabi, lesson plans, teaching portfolios, and teaching demonstrations.
- Help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars articulate their teaching experience, pedagogical commitments, and teaching practices for academic job searches.
Program Implementation & Operations
- Support Teaching and Academic Development programming through Canvas course management, participation tracking, event preparation, resource organization, participant communications, and outreach materials.
- Help maintain organized systems and materials that support consistent delivery of OCLD teaching development offerings.
- Assist with program follow-up and documentation as needed.
Team Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work with the Associate Director and OCLD staff to identify emerging needs, adapt materials, and improve programming based on participant feedback and program goals.
- Attend regular supervision or team meetings and communicate proactively with supervisor and colleagues.
- Support a positive and collaborative team environment that reflects the values of the Graduate Office of Career & Life Design.
What We're Looking For
PhD students enrolled in at least 9 credit hours; in good academic standing with advisor approval. We welcome applicants from all disciplines and backgrounds. Strong candidates will bring:
Required Qualifications
- At least two semesters of college-level teaching experience as a TA, AI, AD, instructor of record, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide constructive, supportive feedback to peers.
- Attention to detail and comfort supporting program materials, resources, and participant communications.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to attend regular team meetings and engage with in-person events as needed.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience facilitating workshops, trainings, peer learning communities, or other educational programs.
- Experience with instructional design, asynchronous learning, eLearning tools, or educational technology.
- Experience offering constructive written or verbal feedback on teaching statements, syllabi, lesson plans, teaching portfolios, or similar materials.
- Experience with peer-to-peer teaching consultation, mentoring, coaching, or instructional support.
- Familiarity with Canvas from an instructor, TA, or course support perspective.
- Familiarity with academic job market preparation for graduate students or postdoctoral scholars.
- Interest in educational development, graduate student professional development, or future faculty preparation.
Salary Range
$22.00/hour
Working Conditions
- Hybrid; minimum 10 hours per week in the office
- 20 hours per week total
- Expected to start as soon as possible, no later than September 1

The Teaching and Academic Development Consultant will need to be available during the working office hours of the Graduate Office of Career & Life Design.
