What is a tax team lead?

Tax Team Leads are professionals who manage and oversee a team of tax specialists or accountants within an organization or accounting firm. Their primary responsibilities include supervising daily tax operations, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations, reviewing complex tax returns, and providing guidance to team members. They also coordinate workflow, train staff, and often act as a liaison between their team and upper management or clients. Tax Team Leads play a critical role in maintaining the accuracy and efficiency of tax-related processes.

How does a tax team lead balance team management with technical tax responsibilities?

As a Tax Team Lead, you are expected to split your time between overseeing the team's workflow, mentoring junior staff, and handling complex tax issues yourself. Balancing these responsibilities often involves effective delegation, clear communication, and regular check-ins to ensure deadlines are met and quality standards are upheld. You'll collaborate closely with both your team and other departments, such as finance and legal, to resolve tax-related queries and implement process improvements. This dual focus develops both your leadership abilities and technical expertise, providing a strong foundation for advancement into higher management roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax team lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Team Lead, you need a deep understanding of tax regulations, accounting principles, and team management, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and a CPA qualification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, ERP systems, and compliance tools is vital for managing workloads and ensuring accuracy. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities set outstanding Tax Team Leads apart by fostering collaboration and driving results. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate tax filings, maintaining regulatory compliance, and leading high-performing teams in a deadline-driven environment.

Lead Meaningful Tax Work in a Firm That Values People
If you're an experienced tax professional who enjoys preparing returns, helping clients, and being a go-to resource for the team, this Tax Team Lead opportunity may be exactly what you've been looking for.
Join a respected Fresno CPA firm with a strong client base, excellent reputation, and leadership that values quality work over corporate politics. This is a hands-on role where your tax knowledge, organization, and client service skills will be appreciated and where you can play an important role in the success of both clients and the firm.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
This isn't a large, impersonal firm where you get lost in the shuffle. Here, your experience matters. You'll work with loyal long-term clients, a collaborative team, and leadership that respects work-life balance while providing room to grow.
If you enjoy variety, responsibility, and being trusted to manage important work, this is an outstanding career move.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Prepare and review a variety of federal and California tax returns
  • Handle individual returns including complex 1040s with Schedules A, C, D, and E
  • Prepare business returns including 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 filings
  • Assist with payroll-related forms including W-2s and 1099s
  • Review client financial records for accuracy and completeness
  • Reconcile income, expenses, and supporting schedules
  • Communicate directly with clients to gather information and answer questions
  • Stay current on tax law updates impacting individuals and closely held businesses
  • Help guide workflow and support teammates during busy season
What We're Looking For
  • Strong experience preparing individual and business tax returns
  • Solid knowledge of federal and California tax filings
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high accuracy
  • Strong client communication and professionalism
  • Prior experience in a CPA firm or tax practice preferred
  • Leadership mindset with willingness to help others succeed
  • CPA or EA is welcomed, but not required
What's Offered
✔ Competitive compensation and benefits
✔ Stable firm with loyal repeat clients
✔ Positive, team-first environment
✔ Leadership that appreciates your contribution
✔ Broad exposure to individual and business tax matters
✔ Opportunity to grow into greater responsibility
✔ Fresno location with established local presence
