What are tax systems?

Tax systems refer to the structures and processes that governments use to collect taxes from individuals and businesses. These systems include various types of taxes, such as income tax, sales tax, and corporate tax, as well as the rules and regulations that govern how taxes are assessed and collected. Tax systems can be progressive, regressive, or flat, depending on how the tax burden is distributed among taxpayers. Understanding a country's tax system is crucial for compliance and effective financial planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax systems specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Systems Specialist, you need a solid understanding of tax regulations, accounting principles, and experience with tax compliance processes, often supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with tax software platforms (such as SAP, Oracle, or Thomson Reuters), data analytics tools, and relevant certifications like Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help specialists manage complex tax data and collaborate across departments. These skills ensure accurate tax reporting, regulatory compliance, and efficient system integration within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in tax systems roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Tax Systems roles often encounter challenges such as staying updated with frequent changes in tax regulations, integrating new tax software with existing systems, and ensuring data accuracy for compliance. To address these issues, it's important to engage in continuous learning, collaborate closely with IT and finance teams, and participate in regular training sessions on both regulatory updates and technological advancements. Additionally, maintaining strong organizational skills and attention to detail can help minimize errors and improve efficiency in managing complex tax processes.

  • Issue Triage & Resolution Act as the primary business-facing point of contact for triaging tax integration issues spanning Ariba, S/4HANA, and OneSource
  • Drive cross-team issue resolution, working directly with Ariba, SAP, OneSource, and other vendor/support teams to see issues through to completion

  • Manage expectations across multiple parties and maintain a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach to issue resolution
  • Governance & Continuous Improvement Stay current on the OneSource product roadmap, regulatory/tax changes, and SAP/Ariba release updates that affect tax integrations
  • Identify opportunities to improve integration reliability, reduce manual intervention, and strengthen the overall tax systems landscape
  • Maintain architecture, configuration, and process documentation for the OneSource/Ariba/S/4HANA integration
Qualifications & Experiences...
  • 9+ years of experience implementing and supporting enterprise tax systems
  • 7-9 years of hands-on implementation or operational experience with Tax solutions like OneSource, Pagero.
  • 5-7 years of transactional processing and operations assurance experience
  • Demonstrated expertise with OneSource, including hands-on experience implementing OneSource integration to Ariba
  • Demonstrated expertise implementing OneSource integration to SAP S/4HANA US and international tax systems implementation experience
  • Functional tax knowledge - understanding of tax posting logic and requirements for US, Europe, and APAC regions
  • Ability to interpret tax regulatory requirements by region and assess their impact on tax engine configuration, master data, and downstream postings
  • Solid working understanding of SAP S/4HANA and SAP Ariba sufficient to understand issues end-to-end and validate fixes across the full transaction flow
  • Proven ability to work across Ariba, SAP, and other parties to triage issues and see them through to completion
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, business-facing approach given the number of parties involved
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Not Required but preferred experience: Knowledge of e-invoicing solutions such as Pagero, Edicom, or SOVOS
  • Experience with additional tax engines such as Vertex
  • Working knowledge of additional SAP modules (MM, SD, AP) that impact taxation
  • Exposure to SAP ABAP or other technical/integration skills
  • Experience working in a national or global company
  • Experience in the media, entertainment, or streaming services industry
