Job description

Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team
The Tax team is focused on building the most tech-advanced tax department in the industry, leveraging automation, custom engineering, and real-time data to maintain a competitive advantage. The Tax Technology Lead serves as the lead architect for the Tax team's digital transformation, reporting to the Head of Tax. This role accelerates technology adoption to transition Tax into a high-velocity, tech-first department, bridging the gap between the Tax team's subject matter experts and internal and external technology resources.
What you'll do
In this role, your primary mandate is to accelerate technology adoption and drive the Tax team's transformation into the most tech-forward tax department in the industry. You'll focus on four strategic areas.
  • Reduce time to value for emerging technologies, including generative AI, LLMs, and cloud-native tax engines.
  • Address technical debt by systematically phasing out legacy processes in favor of scalable, code-based solutions.
  • Instill a developer mindset within the Tax team, establishing version control (GitHub), automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Maintain the department as the internal and external benchmark for financial technology through rapid experimentation and execution.
Responsibilities
  • Refine the Tax team's strategic technology roadmap and develop a multi-year execution plan, defining key objectives, milestones, and initiatives to drive long-term success. Run "art of the possible" and strategy sessions to ensure the Tax team considers all technology possibilities when problem-solving.
  • Lead and arrange training for Tax team members to strengthen their proficiency in and adoption of technology solutions, advancing the goal of building the most tech-forward tax department.
  • Act as a player-coach to architect complex systems and lead tax engineers in building proprietary APIs to bridge global financial systems. Partner with and guide Tax team stakeholders to develop practical, actionable tax requirements that balance technical accuracy with the pace of technology development and adoption.
  • Lead interactions with internal and external resources focused on delivering against the tax technology roadmap. Hold internal and external resources accountable for delivering to the Tax team. Optimize and be accountable for internal and external resources delivering the best product on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate with engineering stakeholders to build a robust, real-time Tax Data Warehouse, ensuring global visibility into tax liabilities.
  • Serve as the technical bridge to integrate tax logic into Stripe's foundational infrastructure in a scalable and robust way.
  • Replace manual compliance processes with automated monitoring and algorithmic anomaly detection.
Who you are
We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Go or Java, with a background in software development or data engineering
  • 12+ years of experience at the intersection of tax and technology, leading digital transformations in fintech or high-growth sectors
  • Deep experience managing technical debt and leading sprints to resolve complex tax challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to work with engineering and product leads to prioritize a technology roadmap
  • Degree in Computer Science or Data Science
Preferred qualifications
  • Deep knowledge of international tax frameworks
