Job description

Senior Tax Associate, Indirect Tax
Our Global Tax team is seeking a Senior Tax Associate within our State and Local Tax Team. This position will be primarily responsible for indirect tax compliance for Capital One. This newly created role will be responsible for preparing sales and use tax and other indirect tax returns, preparing journal entries, researching technical issues and responding to indirect tax audit information requests.
In this role, you will be an integral member of our Tax team who will be interacting and partnering with Capital One Travel, procurement, accounting, finance and legal functions to manage tax risk, ensure accurate compliance with sales and use tax laws, and support corporate-wide initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can work autonomously to meet specific timelines for filing sales and use tax returns. A successful candidate has strong communication skills, attention to details, and a desire for problem solving in a non-routine, dynamic environment.
An Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
  • Strong technical knowledge of state and local sales and use tax laws, regulations, and administrative rules
  • Experience preparing and filing indirect tax returns
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to identify risk, research and resolve tax issues, identify tax savings and refund opportunities, and work strategically with the key lines of business
  • Written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical matters to other team members and applicable business units and stakeholders in a manner appropriate for the audience

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare indirect tax returns for Capital One Travel, including calculating tax in each jurisdiction
  • Prepare monthly journal entries to record sales, use and other local tax accruals, taxes paid and use tax expense
  • Work closely with business units, finance and procurement functions to coordinate data collection, and ensure timely and accurate tax reporting
  • Partner with the Tax Controversy team to respond to questions from tax auditors
  • Prepare responses to indirect tax notices
  • Research technical indirect tax issues as required
  • Prepare tax registrations in new jurisdictions
  • Prepare the monthly reconciliation of indirect tax accounts and ensure proper documentation is maintained to support tax filings and audits
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation solutions for data collection, indirect tax calculations and indirect tax reporting
  • Travel to other company sites and tax conferences as needed

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 2 years of tax experience in a public company or accounting firm or law firm or a combination

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters of Science (MS) in Tax or Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • 3+ years of indirect tax experience, including experience in the travel industry and addressing hotel, accommodations and lodging taxes
  • Direct experience with sales & use tax reporting and payment engines (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, TR One Source)
  • Experience with invoicing and accounts receivable systems for indirect tax collection
  • Experience researching sales and use tax laws and advising companies on the impacts of those laws and regulations
  • Direct experience with the testing and implementation of a sales and use tax reporting and payment engine
  • Experience with Alteryx or other data automation products
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite or Google Suite

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $96,500 - $110,100 for Sr. Tax Specialist
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
