About the Opportunity

A respected law firm is seeking a Senior Associate Tax Attorney to join its growing tax controversy practice in Bethesda, Maryland.

This attorney will work with business owners and individuals facing complex tax problems, including unfiled tax returns, issues arising from previous filings, IRS or state assessments, penalties, fines, and other tax-related disputes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys tax controversy, client advocacy, negotiation, and finding solutions to complicated tax issues.

Responsibilities
  • Represent business owners and individuals in federal and state tax controversy matters.
  • Assist clients who have failed to file required tax returns or have outstanding tax compliance issues.
  • Review and analyze tax assessments, penalties, interest, and liabilities resulting from previous filings.
  • Develop strategies to appeal, negotiate, reduce, or resolve tax liabilities.
  • Represent clients before the IRS and state taxing authorities.
  • Prepare and review petitions, appeals, correspondence, legal documents, and other tax controversy filings.
  • Conduct legal and tax research involving complex federal and state tax matters.
  • Work directly with clients to understand their tax issues and develop practical resolution strategies.
  • Manage multiple matters while maintaining strong client communication and service.
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active Maryland bar admission, or eligibility for admission.
  • Experience in tax law, tax controversy, tax litigation, or a related practice area.
  • Strong understanding of federal and/or state tax laws and administrative procedures.
  • Experience handling tax assessments, audits, appeals, collections, penalties, delinquent returns, or other tax disputes is highly preferred.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong ability to work independently while collaborating with attorneys and other professionals.
  • Client-focused approach with strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
