Job description

Job Description: Shipfitter
Responsible for surface preparation of structural metal components, as well as the layout and fabrication of metal structural parts within the hull of a vessel for riveting and welding.

Pay: $31.00
Night Shift

EXPERIENCE:
  • 3 years of 1st Class shipyard experience
  • Prior experience as a shipfitter
  • Ability to operate a cutting torch and tack weld is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties represent the general nature of the work but are not exhaustive:
  • Work from blueprints or templates to lay out the position of parts on metal using a scribe and hand tools.
  • Locate and mark reference lines.
  • Position parts in the hull of the vessel with assistance from a Tacker or Helper.
  • Align parts in relation to each other using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Mark the location of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding or riveting.
  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding when necessary.
  • Bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using the equipment mentioned above.
Safety & Environmental Factors:
All employees are expected to adhere to the company’s safety policies to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This role involves working under extreme hot or cold conditions and requires the physical ability to stand for the entire shift, use hands for various tasks, ascend stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Team members must occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
