Job Description:
Description: The Locksmith is responsible for timely maintenance, repair, and installation of locks, door closures, and electronic locking systems throughout JPS Health Network. The Locksmith makes, installs, repairs, and modifies keys and/or locks, and maintains documents and records.
Typical Duties:
  1. Makes new keys for duplication, impressions, and key codes. Fits keys to lock setting pins in order to open locks with new keys or multiple keys.
  2. Visually inspects and operates locks and latches for proper functions. Restores to operational condition by disassembling, cleaning, oiling, repairing, or replacing cork and/or damaged parts of the internal mechanisms.
  3. Modifies key and combination locks when the security of existing locks is compromised. Adapts existing locks to fit into JPS Health Network Code Management System; drilling or punching center holes, cutting slots; filling parts to size or by performing similar tasks.
  4. Services combination-type locks which includes establishing combinations, changing and/or devising new combinations.
  5. Replaces defective locks. Uses mechanical tools to open combination locks when mechanisms jam and/or combinations are lost. Removes broken keys and open locks in emergency situations.
  6. Assigns master numbers to keys. Stencils or stamps keys to match locks, ensuring the integrity of key management system is maintained.
  7. Installs, maintains, changes, codes, and repairs various commercial locking devices, i.e. electric releases and strikers, specialized manufacturer door openers, and various security systems, in sensitive areas of the hospital.
  8. Orders parts; repurposes non-serviceable locks to secure salvageable parts for use. Maintains lock supply levels and reorders as necessary.
  9. Maintains administrative records and completes paperwork. Researches manufacturer data for information relative to job function.
  10. Provides technical assistance, guidance, and training to lower level workers on locksmith work.
  11. Assists planners with in-house projects involving secure locking systems to assure compatibility with installed systems, when assigned.
  12. Provides advice to engineers on design projects related to security systems, when assigned.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
    Required Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 4 plus years of experience with repairing, replacing, and/or maintaining various lock types and building security systems.
  • OR
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Vocational or Technical school certification specializing in Locksmith work.
