As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for tariff in the United States is $31.18, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $37.02 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a tariff?

Tariffs are taxes or duties imposed by a government on imported goods. They are used to make imported products more expensive than domestic products, thus protecting local industries from foreign competition. Tariffs can also be used as a tool for negotiating trade agreements or as a source of revenue for the government. The rates and types of tariffs may vary depending on the product, country of origin, and trade policies in place.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in tariff management roles?

Professionals in tariff management often navigate complex and frequently changing regulations, which requires staying up-to-date on both domestic and international trade policies. They must collaborate closely with logistics, legal, and compliance teams to ensure accurate classification and application of tariffs, which can be challenging when dealing with ambiguous product descriptions or evolving trade agreements. Additionally, balancing cost-efficiency with legal compliance, and communicating tariff impacts to internal stakeholders, are regular aspects of the role. Effective time management and attention to detail are crucial to prevent costly errors or delays.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tariff analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tariff Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of international trade regulations, and a relevant degree in economics, business, or a related field. Familiarity with tariff management systems, Harmonized System (HS) codes, and trade compliance software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These competencies are essential to ensure accurate classification, compliance, and cost-effective trade operations.

We’re looking for a strategic, detail-oriented compliance professional who thrives in complex regulatory environments and enjoys partnering with stakeholders to solve problems, drive accountability, and support organizational compliance efforts. Successful candidates will bring strong analytical and communication skills, experience interpreting regulatory or tariff requirements, and the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across multiple business areas.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a mission-driven organization responsible for keeping the lights on today and in the future.

What You'll Do

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and monitoring to ensure organizational compliance with tariff requirements across business units.
  • Evaluate implementation efforts related to new and revised tariff requirements to confirm alignment with compliance expectations.
  • Identify and assess tariff-related compliance risks and partner with business units to support the development of effective, risk-based controls.
  • Analyze SPP Revision Requests to evaluate organizational impact and proactively identify compliance considerations and risks.
  • Maintain oversight of tariff-related compliance controls, including ownership, documentation, and ongoing effectiveness.
  • Maintain visibility into compliance obligations, control ownership, and risk activities through the organization’s GRC platform.
  • Partner with business leaders to integrate tariff requirements into business processes while preserving accountability within the business units.
  • Influence stakeholders to promote consistent understanding, accountability, and adherence to tariff obligations.
  • Support audit activities by coordinating documentation, providing subject matter expertise, and validating control effectiveness related to tariff compliance.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of tariff compliance procedures, processes, and best practices.

  • Experience interpreting complex policy, law or tariff requirements, or other regulatory requirements, developing controls, and assessing compliance risk.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of compliance frameworks, risk management principles, and/or internal control environments.
  • Ability to analyze complex requirements and identify practical, risk-based compliance solutions.
  • Experience working with Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) systems or similar compliance management tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate operational impacts of regulatory requirements.
  • Advanced communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence and guide individuals at multiple levels of an organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to evolving regulatory or tariff requirements.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to translate complex requirements into clear guidance and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:
