How much do tanker companies jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for tanker companies in the United States is $26.21, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $27.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a tanker company role, and why are they important?

Success in a tanker company role requires a solid understanding of maritime operations, safety protocols, and relevant certifications such as STCW and tanker-specific endorsements. Familiarity with navigation systems, cargo handling equipment, and regulatory compliance tools is typically essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help individuals excel in dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environments. These competencies are crucial to ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant transport of hazardous materials across global waters.

What is the difference between Tanker Companies vs Oil & Gas Operators?

AspectTanker CompaniesOil & Gas Operators

Work EnvironmentShipboard, maritime settingsOnshore facilities, offshore platforms
Employer & Industry UsageMaritime shipping, freight transportExploration, production, refining

While both tanker companies and oil & gas operators work within the energy sector, tanker companies focus on transporting liquid cargo via ships, requiring maritime certifications. Oil & gas operators manage exploration and production activities on land or offshore, often involving engineering and safety certifications. Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right industry and role.

What are tanker companies?

Tanker companies are businesses that specialize in transporting liquid cargo, such as crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, or liquefied natural gas, using specially designed ships or vehicles called tankers. These companies play a vital role in global trade by safely and efficiently moving large quantities of liquids across oceans, seas, or land. Tanker companies must comply with strict safety and environmental regulations to prevent spills and ensure the secure delivery of their cargo. They may operate internationally or regionally, serving industries such as energy, chemicals, and food processing.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working for tanker companies, and how can they be addressed?

Employees in tanker companies often face challenges such as strict safety regulations, extended periods away from home, and the need for constant vigilance to prevent environmental incidents. Adapting to changing international shipping rules and ensuring compliance with safety protocols can also be demanding. Building strong teamwork and communication skills, staying updated with industry training, and leveraging support systems provided by the company can help employees successfully navigate these challenges and maintain both safety and job satisfaction.
