Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Marion, Ohio. Union Tank Car Company's regulatory, engineering, and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago's financial district, close to major public transportation hubs. Primary Job Functions
This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.
  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.

  • Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.

  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.

  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.

  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.

  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or pass a Combined Basic Skills Test

    • Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company

    • Must be able to demonstrate job related knowledge/shills of reading blueprints and use common shop measuring devices such as straight edge rulers, welding gauges and dial gauges.

    • Must be able to successfully complete qualification requirements to perform applicable Non-destructive testing procedures.

    • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently

    • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision

    • Ability to read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly instructions

    • Have analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail

    • Safety and quality focused

    • Be available to work any shift, and be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime, as allowed per the union contract

    Environmental & Working Conditions
    • Moderate to heavy physical effort involved. Lifts and carries necessary equipment to car to perform operation. Climbs, walks, and balances on top of car while welding.

    • Possibility of exposure to x-ray radiation hazards.

    • Must follow prescribed safety rules to avoid possible injury.

    • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind off excess weld slag or spatter.

    • Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises. Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.

    • Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
