Position Overview

Crossroads Talent Solutions is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Assistant Historian to support the Programs and Integration Division (PID) within the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy for Management (DUSN(M)), a directorate reporting to the Under Secretary of the Navy.

Candidates must possess an active Secret security clearance and be able to maintain the clearance throughout employment. Candidates must also be eligible to maintain unescorted access to the Pentagon Reservation.

The Assistant Historian will work closely with the Department of the Navy Secretariat Historian to preserve institutional memory, manage historical records and resources, support the accountability and presentation of art and artifacts, coordinate historical outreach initiatives, and assist with strategic communications and special events.

This position is ideal for a professional who combines an interest or background in history, museums, archives, records management, or historical preservation with strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.

Key ResponsibilitiesInstitutional Memory & Historical Records - 35%

• Support the collection, organization, preservation, and management of historical source documents related to the Department of the Navy Secretariat.
• Develop detailed project plans, milestones, schedules, and tracking processes to support annual Secretariat history summaries.
• Assist the Secretariat Historian in preparing annual history data calls and taskers for political appointee offices.
• Enter and manage taskers within the Enterprise Task Management Software Solution (ETMS2), including tracking deadlines, reviewing submissions for completeness, and resolving routine questions.
• Develop and maintain organized reference files and historical information repositories.
• Collaborate with the Directives and Records Management Division (DRMD), Secretariat Historian, and Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) to ensure historical materials are properly retained, filed, transferred, or archived.
• Help ensure historical records practices comply with applicable records management, security, legal, and organizational requirements while supporting future research needs.

Art, Artifact & Exhibit Support - 35%

• Assist with the acquisition, borrowing, tracking, accountability, and appropriate presentation of historical art and artifacts within senior Navy leadership offices.
• Support the management of Pentagon E-Ring display cases, special exhibits, and other historical displays.
• Coordinate with the Secretariat Historian and other stakeholders to establish and manage artifact and artwork loans.
• Collaborate with the DUSN(M) publications branch, museum professionals, historians, and other subject-matter experts to support exhibit development and completion.
• Develop and improve databases or tracking systems for cataloging artwork, artifacts, and related historical information.
• Organize historical information used for exhibit labels, publications, presentations, and tours.
• Assist with maintaining accurate accountability and documentation for historical property and resources.

Historical Outreach, Events & Strategic Communications - 30%

• Support the Secretariat Historian in developing and executing history-related events and outreach initiatives.
• Coordinate with speakers, the PID Events Team, Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), NHHC, National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC), and other stakeholders as appropriate.
• Assist with strategic communications supporting historical programs, events, exhibits, and initiatives.
• Promote awareness of military history, museums, historical preservation, and the importance of documenting current Department of the Navy activities for future generations.
• Develop project plans, business and financing plans, Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms), event folders, and supporting communications.
• Collaborate with Navy history commands and museums to support development of publicly accessible Secretariat history resources, including web-based content highlighting artifacts on loan.
• Provide or support historical tours of the Pentagon and Secretariat spaces as needed.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Active Secret security clearance is required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to the Pentagon Reservation.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally and effectively in extemporaneous conversations.
• Demonstrated ability to work within complex organizations or bureaucratic environments involving multiple stakeholders.
• Experience developing, coordinating, and implementing detailed plans for long-term or complex projects.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines, milestones, collaborators, and competing priorities.
• Strong organizational, research, information-management, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively with historians, government personnel, museum professionals, and other stakeholders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 applications and the ability to quickly learn and effectively use additional information-management and program-management systems.
• Ability to handle sensitive or controlled information appropriately and comply with applicable security, records-management, and organizational requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Education or professional experience related to history, military history, public history, museum studies, archives, records management, library science, historic preservation, or a related field.
• Experience supporting a federal agency, Department of Defense organization, military command, museum, archive, or similarly complex organization.
• Experience with museum collections, artwork, artifacts, exhibits, historical records, or archival materials.
• Experience developing databases, catalogs, records repositories, or other information-management systems.
• Experience coordinating executive-level events, exhibits, tours, or strategic communications.
• Familiarity with ETMS2 or similar federal task-management systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements

Conditions of Employment

Security Clearance: An active Secret security clearance is required for this position. The selected candidate must maintain Secret clearance eligibility throughout employment.

Pentagon Access: Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access to the Pentagon Reservation.

Work Location: Position requires regular on-site support at the Pentagon. Situational telework may be authorized based on Government requirements.

Travel: Very limited TDY/travel may be required.

Drug Testing: This position is not currently designated as a drug-testing position.

IMPORTANT CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT
