Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I is a full performance level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility for other employees. Employees receive close supervision from a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor (CMOS)\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

Position duties include:\r\n\r\n Maintaining control and discipline among incarcerated individuals.\r\n Conducting searches for contraband items.\r\n Administering verbal or written disciplinary actions toincarcerated individualsfor any violations of conduct standards.\r\n Enforcing safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.\r\n Assigning installation maintenance or repair tasks to designatedincarcerated individualsperforming at various levels of proficiency in the trade.\r\n Training and instructingincarcerated individualsregarding methods and techniques, using tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.\r\n Inspecting and approving/disapproving all work performed byincarcerated individualsfor adherence to quality standards.\r\n Estimating time, materials and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.\r\n Orders supplies and materials needed; keeping records of tools, supplies and materials used.\r\n Personally performs certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure.\r\n Planning and implementing appropriate procedures,\r\n Operating hand and power tools and equipment needed.\r\n Escorting third party vendors and inspecting completed work assignment.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.\r\nExperience:Two years of maintenance mechanic experience.\r\nNotes:\r\n\r\n\r\n The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces militaryservice\r\n Experience in correctional institutional specialtycodes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.\r\n\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

\r\n Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland prior to permanent appointment.\r\n Some positions in this classification may require employees to acquire the appropriate Maryland driver's license to operate motor vehicles for the transportation ofincarcerated individualsor supplies.\r\n Employees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: \r\nU.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status \r\nMust be at least 21 years of age \r\nA completed background investigation \r\nOral interview \r\nPhysical examination. \r\nEmployees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\nEmployees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r\n

SELECTION PROCESS

\r\nBecoming a Correctional Maintenance Officerrequires that a recruit completes the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), at one of our regional locations throughout the state of Maryland. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, individuals will be assigned to facilities throughout the state of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.\r\n\r\n\r\nPlease indicate on your application all the counties in the state of Maryland where you are willing to accept employment.
