What is a systems software engineer?

Systems Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the underlying software that enables computer hardware and application software to function effectively. They work on operating systems, device drivers, embedded systems, and other foundational platforms, ensuring system stability, security, and performance. Their role often involves low-level programming, optimizing system resources, and collaborating with hardware engineers to create seamless integration between software and hardware components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (typically in C, C++, or Rust), a deep understanding of operating systems, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Git, build systems (e.g., Make, CMake), kernel development environments, and sometimes relevant certifications (such as Linux Foundation Certified Engineer) is typical. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help you excel in complex, collaborative projects. These skills and qualities are crucial to designing robust, efficient system-level software that meets performance, reliability, and security standards.

How does a systems software engineer typically collaborate with hardware engineers and other technical teams?

Systems Software Engineers often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure that software integrates seamlessly with physical components. This collaboration may involve participating in cross-functional meetings, debugging issues at the hardware-software interface, and jointly optimizing system performance. Additionally, they coordinate with quality assurance and product teams to align on requirements, test plans, and release schedules. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as resolving complex, system-level challenges often requires input from multiple technical disciplines.

What is the difference between Systems Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSystems Software EngineerSoftware Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing system-level software, operating systems, and firmwareCreating applications, websites, and user-facing software
Required SkillsLow-level programming (C, C++), OS concepts, hardware interactionHigh-level programming (Java, Python, JavaScript), UI/UX design
Work EnvironmentOften in hardware or OS teams, embedded systems, or infrastructureApplication development teams, web or mobile app projects
CertificationsTypically none required, but Linux or OS certifications can helpOften certifications like Java, AWS, or specific language certifications

While both roles involve software development, Systems Software Engineers focus on system-level and hardware-interfacing software, whereas Software Developers create user-facing applications. The roles overlap in programming skills but differ in scope and environment.

Job description

Join Our Team as a Software Engineer
Las Vegas, NV | Full-Time | Aerospace & Defense

About EO Solutions:
EO Solutions is a fast-growing software and prototype manufacturing company committed to transitioning cutting-edge technologies from the research lab to real-world defense applications. Our current focus is building and integrating advanced Space Domain Awareness (SDA) capabilities, including both active and passive sensors. At EO, we value learning, innovation, and problem-solving above all.

Position Overview:

This role is based at our Las Vegas office, where our software, hardware, and systems teams work side-by-side.
As a Software Engineer at EO Solutions, you’ll take a hands-on role in developing mission-critical systems that support Space Domain Awareness (SDA). This is not a narrow software development role — it’s a multidisciplinary engineering position where you’ll design, prototype, and deploy software that interacts with real-world sensors, supports operational decision-making, and adapts to fast-changing mission needs.

You’ll work across the entire development lifecycle — from early-stage R&D to fielded deployments — contributing to both back-end and front-end systems, algorithm development, and infrastructure automation. Whether you're deploying services to edge devices in remote environments or refining code based on operator feedback, your work will directly impact national defense capabilities.

We're looking for engineers who can think critically, operate independently, and communicate effectively with teammates from different engineering backgrounds. If you're energized by solving hard problems, working with physical systems, and building things that get used in the real world, you’ll thrive here.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement innovative algorithms for tracking, image processing, and data fusion
  • Design and build robust software systems for sensor control and mission operations
  • Prototype and deploy containerized applications to cloud, on-premise, and edge computing environments
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and field operators to translate mission needs into working software
  • Write and maintain high-quality, well-tested, and observable code with clear documentation
  • Contribute to architecture planning, technical discussions, and code reviews to ensure a scalable and maintainable codebase
  • Engage in requirement gathering and refinement with cross-disciplinary stakeholders
  • Operate with self-sufficiency and ownership, managing your time and priorities with minimal oversight

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience using Python, C or C++, and Java
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate in a technical, multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience developing in both cloud-based and self-hosted (on-premise/edge) environments
  • Proficient with Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and messaging technologies (e.g., Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ)
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL database design and usage
  • Skilled in both rapid prototyping and production-grade development, with sound judgment on when each applies
  • Solid understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field from a U.S. institution
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with real-world sensor systems (e.g., cameras, telescopes, RF sensors)
  • Familiarity with astrodynamics, orbital mechanics, or Space Domain Awareness (SDA)
  • Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and test automation
  • Background in research prototyping, defense systems, or mission-critical deployments

Why Join EO Solutions?
At EO Solutions, our people are our greatest asset. We offer:

The opportunity to work on innovative space technologies and make a meaningful impact.
A collaborative and supportive environment that values growth, creativity, and well-being.
A competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including:
401(k) Matching: Invest in your future with our generous retirement plan.
