Environmental Health Assistant I

The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Health is seeking to hire an experienced professional to fill the position of Environmental Health Assistant I. Work involves systematic investigations and extermination on residential and commercial mosquito breeding grounds. The Environmental Health Assistant I will also accurately record and track mosquito control activities and chemical applications. Department starting hourly rate: $20.8.

The essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts thorough and systematic investigations for mosquito breeding on residential and commercial property.
  • Responds to complaints and educates the public about mosquito breeding during backyard surveys and other surveillance and abatement activities.
  • Exterminates pests by formulating and dispensing mosquito and rodent chemicals in accordance with product labels, to include operating mosquito fogging trucks in the evening or early morning.
  • If needed, engages in ditch maintenance, which includes the use of hand tools (hoe forks, bush axes, brush cutters).
  • Maintains daily worksheets and accurate records of mosquito control activities and chemical applications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. Category 8 pesticide certification is preferred. Category 8 Public Health Pesticide Applicator License required within 14 months of employment.

This position requires the ability to work both independently (backyard inspections) and as part of a team (tidal ditching) and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including mosquito control activities in the summer heat and tidal ditching, which includes navigating marshy terrain wearing hip boots.
